What five people with public voices do you think are worth listening to, and why? (This 'why' might not be quite so obvious )

Clarification - currently living? or in general?

I went with "currently living" and got the "all time" follow up question. These people cover their bases. message board celebrity of the day (part ii) - craig

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

Ok.. lots of answers...

If you had the power to solve one of the great ills of the world: 1. environmental polution, 2. overpopulation (and it's inherent evils of poverty and starvation), 3. global warming (may or may not be linked to the first item), 4. worldwide terrorism, 5. the AIDS epidemic, 6. pending catastrophe in the middle East; or possibly another of your own choosing - what would your choice be?

That's a really tough question and one that could change on any given day (much like what's your favorite song). While there are definitely global issues at hand, I spent two summers campaigning/lobbying for the environment. If I learned anything from those two summers - it was the cliche, think globally act locally. So I would have to pick issues that were perhaps "smaller". All the choices you gave me are SO important. But right now if I had to choose something to wave a magic wand and remove - it would be domestic violence/abuse of any kind - spousal and ESPECIALLY that of children. My second answer on a larger scale would have been to remove HATE from the world. Not that people couldn't see eye to eye - I'm talking true hatred.

What is your favorite way to recharge your batteries so to speak? How to you relax and unwind? I watch movies, spend time with friends. I'm currently addicted to the food channel - so sometimes I'll challenge myself with a new entree. I listen to music and am also a voracious reader.

What are your top two vacation spots, Craig? And if $$ were no object? Well I learned to scuba dive and love Grand Cayman, so that would be one of my choices. I've been to all 50 states (some several times) - and also lived in California, Florida and here in NY. Not a vacation, but one of my favorite places in the US (when people ask) is Alamagordo, NM. The reason? White Sands. Miles of PURE white sand. I was there in 84 for a day playing on the dunes and had a bbq around sunset. Simply breathtaking and right up there with the Grand Canyon. If money were no object though - Australia would be the place!

So if you won the lottery, what's the first thing you'd spend money on? Any mortgage, credit card balance, etc that my family owed would be paid off. I'd set up trust funds for my nephew and niece. I'd set up a few scholarship programs through my alma mater. But the very first "frivolous" thing I would do? Depending on the sum - one thing I'd love to do is pay for as many friends and myself to take a cruise somewhere.

What is your all-time favorite dessert? Hmmmm... I'd have to go with the brownie sundae. I'm a big ice cream fan - so I'd also have to plug the most amazing ice cream I have ever encountered - which is GRAETERS (based in Ohio)

What bad trendy fashion from the past did you adopt, only to look back at now with laughter? Honestly, I was never a trend follower. That was more my brother. Believe it or not, I was very introverted and shy for many years. I had a core group of friends. Interestingly enough - my high school had, of course, the different cliques (they were called by the "walls" they hung out at in various places - very John Hughes) - While I was never in any particular clique, I was accepted by all of them. I started to come out of my shell in High School and part of that was getting involved with the local television station located in our high school. I was the only sophmore in the "highest" production class which produced the daily news show. After being every position on the crew, I also was in front of the camera several times. The closest thing I ever did which I would considere "trendy" - and look back and laugh is, in my sophmore year in college I grew a bit of a pony tail because some of my artistic friends had them. It lasted about 3 weeks before I (and my girlfriend at the time) knew it just wasn't me.

What were your favorite TV shows as a child? The Muppet Show, Diff'rent Strokes, Facts of Live, St. Elsewhere, Sid and Marty Krofft, Family Ties, One Day at a Time, Woody Woodpecker, Hello Larry, Little House on the Prairie, He-Man, and several others

1. Where have you guys been keeping Eddie Varley these days? Eddie's around - he's posted here and there. I swear I've done nothing to him. You can't pin this on me coppers!

2. Have you ever met--or even seen--Phantom 2 in person. And known about it? No.. But I have a strong suspicion - many times LOL

3. What is BWW's official bird? Based on what I read on the off-topic bird. It would have to be the middle finger - or the dodo message board celebrity of the day (part ii) - craig

4. If you were to select the official song for BWW, what would
it be? There's no business like show business? We are the Champions? We are the World?

5. Do BWW performers who lurk on BWW stick to the main board or
do they peek at the Off-Topic to confirm their fears of just
how unbalanced certain posters might be?
Good question - People who lurk, lurk everywhere...

6. Have you ever walked out of a play? If so, which one?
Never. Like with train wrecks, I've always been fascinated and wanted to at least see if there was any payoff at the end.

7. Which is more romantic: dawn or sunset? I have to go with Sunset. I'm not a morning person per se.

8. If tomorrow you were going to speak before Congress, what
topic would you want to discuss? Domestic violence and child abuse laws.

9. Naming children: favorite name for a boy? for a girl? Hmmm. Had to think about this for awhile. I think Zachary for a boy and Rebecca for a girl.

10. What did you want to be when you grew up? a muppeteer.

Congratulations, Craig! You are truly deserving of being CoW...long may you graze the fields of BWW in glory!

Seriously, you manage to walk the fine line of being you and being a moderator et al without losing your sense of humor or taking it all personally; I would think that is difficult to do. (And for those inclined to think this is a swipe at anyone else, it truly isn't...)

Thanks for being part of the team that has given many of us a place to call home on the internet, with our uniting love of theater and espansive range of personalities and personality disorders!

Rather than me set parameters on those five voices, how about we go with 'voices that speak to people today' (which could be either living or dead,) and then you get to have an open field. The curiosity for me is what you think it's important for people today to be open to hearing.

Will get to the important voices question..

"What's your fav OLD style science fiction story/writer and why.
And the same for the new style ?"

I love H.G. Wells (did a thesis on him), HP Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov. They all capture raw emotion and write not only science fiction - but also very well crafted mysteries.

Modern day? I'd have to go with Michael Crichton - his incredible research and detailed writing are intense. I also will also hold a special place in my heart for the wit and logic bending writings of Douglas Adams.

Craig...

If you were alone on a desert island:

What three books would you want with you?

An endless supply of which three foods would you request?

Would you be able to make a laptop out of coconuts and develop an internet connection?

An endless supply of which three foods would you request?
Strawberries or Green grapes, (assuming I had fire) - steak and potatoes.

Would you be able to make a laptop out of coconuts and develop an internet connection?
Yes.. but I wouldn't be able to fix the boat that got me there.

Thanks for reminding me to ask about the muppets, Undi.! :o)

Craig...do you remember when Kermit was a guest host on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He was in a tux and interviewed Miss Piggy and then "human guests"--I believe one was Bernadette Peters. The muppets "Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem" played with Doc Severinson and the orchestra. And the drummer, "Animal" came over and swooned at Bernadette.

It was a great show...I remember Kermit looking down and reading from his notecards for interview questions for his guests. That little detail was just "perfect." It convinced us Kermit was real!

I'm not sure I have a favorite guest star - too many were so fun to watch. I think ONE of my very faves was Gene Kelly though. The whole premise that he was just there to watch and didn't want to perform was fun - and the medley of Rolf at the piano trying to get him to sing Singin' in the Rain and Gene launching into other songs...

Your board question is best suited for Rob though...

Beacon - I definitely remember that - and also when he hosted 20/20 (or was it 60 minutes?). Larry King also did a spectacular interview with both Jim and Kermit.

I've always thought Kermit would be the perfect date. He's sweet, kind, and long-suffering. However, Miss Piggy would be a force to be reckoned with if you tried to steal her frog.

And, why didn't Statler and Hilton get more airtime than just sitting up in the balcony and making caustic remarks?

Do you remember the Muppets episode where the pig cast did "Hamlet"? "Alas, poor Por-rick, I knew him well." I fell off the sofa laughing.

The Muppet Show was definitely not written for children. They humor is very "smart" - as with all the muppet movies

Craig,

I swear I was going to PM you the other day when lo, and behold, you were chosen MBCotD. So I figured I would just tell you here what I was going to say in my PM.

When you first started this thread, I confess that I thought it was kind of silly. But then I was home sick one day and started reading all of the posts in the thread, and I learned something valuable about how we are all connected.

Now I think it's great, and I thank you for creating it. It has helped me to be more trusting, more vulnerable and more compassionate.

So I am thrilled that you, yourself, have been honored for an entire weekend. Congratulations!

Miss Pennywise

P.S. Now I look forward to reading the thread everyday...not just when I'm "sick"!
