Mexico City Visit

I am joining a structured tour from Cancun up the Yukatan Peninsula, visiting Mayan ruins and towns and ending in Mexico City. I am staying one day later in Mexico City to take advantage of the sights of the city. This trip will take place late April through first week in May. I have researched the metro in Mexico City and it seems both inexpensive and efficient. From my hotel in the city center I want to take the line that goes to the Zocalo.. The other line is a straight shot to the Basilica of Guadalupe. For those that know, is the metro safe" This is from someone who has rode NYC transit at 5 a.m completely drunk. In Mexico, I will be not in that condition. Also I have read differing accounts of cost of taxi from city center to airport, fluctuates. Any info positive and/or negative will be greatly appreciated. The metro is very safe (safer than NYC as far as I can tell). It is also insanely clean! They polish the floors. It does get really crowded but everyone just kinda giggles when you're crammed in there. If you have done " 5 a.m completely drunk" oy just be careful out there. Stick to touristy areas and just be careful at night in Mexico City. It is a big city and things can happen just be alert, people are really great there.

I was there 2 years ago and the taxis were fighting with Uber, not sure where that stands but look into it. Back then I wouldn't step foot in an uber because of the well-deserved backlash.

***Glad you are extending your stay and I totally recommend more time if you can. Mexico City has soooo much it is almost overwhelming. Also the food there is insanely great and inexpensive. Much better than you will find in an area like Cancun.

Thanks for all your responses. Blaxx, my tour includes a visit to the Anthropology Museum. If there is time remaining, I plan to see the Castle on my own, when the group returns to the hotel. For my extra day, I am visiting the Zocalo in the morning to include the Temple Mayor, Cathedral (climb the bell tower) and Palace De Bela Artes. If I finish these by 1:00 then I will take metro to the Basilica of Guadaloupe. Although not Catholic (or even Christian) I would still like to see it.

Have any of you visited Puebla? We make a stop there on the way to Mexico City. I am interested in getting a very small piece of their talavera pottery. Hopefully authentic. Looking at various sites on internet, even tiny pieces are close to $100. If you saw any of this pottery, is that a typical price? A piece I would like would be about 6-8" in height.

Thanks Henrikegerman for the info. My tour stops there on the way to Mexico City. Although we have an included lunch, I may skip it so I will have extra time to see the sights. I'm sure our stop will only be for 3-4 hours at the most. A hour and a half of that time will be for lunch, so I don't want to waste any time. I don't think I will have time for any museums. I want to concentrate on the churches and colonial buildings. But I have written down your suggestions, just in case.

Don't worry, it's a safe city, no matter what you can read out there telling the opposite. My personal experience was really good. You caneasily move around CDMX with Uber, it's cheap and really good.
