December 8, 2004

Dear Friends,

May I take a break from our post-election despair to share with you a little piece of happy/silly/cool news?

"Fahrenheit 9/11" has been nominated by the People's Choice Awards as the American public's "Favorite Film of the Year." The five nominees were chosen from a poll of thousands of Americans in mid-to-late November. The other nominees for best film are "Spiderman 2," "The Incredibles," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (with Jim Carrey), and "Shrek 2." It is the first time ever a documentary has been nominated for best film by the People's Choice Awards.

The People's Choice Awards are considered, among all the awards shows, to be the one which most accurately reflects the "mainstream" public opinion in the United States.

OK, now, here's the best part: YOU get to vote! Online. Now. Just go to http://www.pcavote.com/voting/film/f01.shtmlhttp://www.pcavote.com/voting/film/f01.shtml, click on the little circle next to "Fahrenheit 9/11" in the "Favorite Movie" category and press the "vote" button. Voting is going on now and continues only through this coming Monday, December 13, at 3:00pm ET, so send an e-mail to your friends and let them know they can vote, too. Winners will accept their awards live on CBS on January 9.

Now, normally I wouldn't make a very big deal out of something like this. It's nice and I'm honored, but it's not exactly the number one priority on any of our minds these days. In fact, when we found out we were nominated over a week ago, I didn't even think to tell you about it or put it up on our website.

But then a group of top Republicans took out a full page ad in USA Today (and placed a similar one in the Hollywood trade magazine, Variety) proclaiming that "An election is over, but a war of ideas continues." The point of the ad was to say that while they, as right wing conservatives, were proud of getting rid of Kerry, there was still one more nuisance running around loose they had to deal with -- me! They also issued a not-so-subtle threat to the Academy Awards voters that, in essence, said don't even THINK about nominating "Fahrenheit 9/11" for Best Picture. And Bill O'Reilly recently bellowed that if the Oscars recognize my work this year, Middle America will boycott Hollywood.

Oops. I guess he spoke too soon. Because now along comes Middle America's favorite awards show, the People's Choice, and the People's Choice this year, along with a Spiderman superhero and a lovable green ogre, is a film that apparently continues to resonate throughout the country. The truth about Iraq, Bush, terror and fear. The election has not altered or made irrelevant, unfortunately, a single one of these issues. That they (and the film that dealt with these issues) are still at the forefront of the majority of the public's minds should give serious pause to Mr. Bush as he brags about a nonexistent "mandate" and begins to spend his "political capital."

He may have been (barely) the people's choice on November 2 (Ohio recount excluded), but now the people get to vote again, this time for a movie. It's about the best we can do right now, and, trust me, it won't be long before we start the real work we need to do to get our country back.

Again, go to http://www.pcavote.com/voting/film/f01.shtmlhttp://www.pcavote.com/voting/film/f01.shtml if you want to vote for our film. I promise, if we win, to give a nice and polite speech.

Yours,

Michael Moore

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

papa - obviously, we're only getting one perspective here (and from someone I can't say i overly respond to most of the time) - but it seemed to me that he was responding to these ads placed in major publications. I hadn't heard about that - I wonder what the reality of them was.

Oh good lord! The man has no shame and apparently, no dignity. Campaigning for a People's Choice Award? Does he think that this nomination means the award will be taken seriously? If so, it would be a first. He just gets more ridiculous every day.

I loved Shrek! It's so nice of him to campaign for that movie. Maybe it's because they share so many physical similarities.

I'm sick of liberals bashing Moore. Right now, he is one of the only people fighting on our general side. I'd love to see him win this award and be nominated at the Oscars just to defy this bs moral majority crap that is going on right now. I don't see it as ego boosting for Moore. I see his work as a symbol for all that craps on Bush and the nasty conservatives in this nation.

The Incredibles is by far my favorite on that list. But, I'm going to vote for F9/11 just to piss of Bush and all of his kool aid drinking fools--that includes you, papa.

Well, I'm sure Rove will release a How to Corrupt an Election for Dummies. Then, all you need to do is send out fear tactics and rig the computer voting system, and you are home free! mickey's mores

As much as I dislike Bush, and trust me I really dislike him, I really cannot stand that fat communist bastard.

Sorry, just my two cents...

How is Moore a communist? If you really think that he doesn't love this country, you are very mistaken.

#14Republicans to Import Dioxin from the Ukraine

I hear that when Karl Roverer heard that the Ukrainian challenger had been poisoned with dioxin, he slammed his fist on his desk and and said, "Verdammt! Why didn't WE think of that?"

So Daniel Gurley massaged his shoulders and said, "There, there, Karly. There's always next time..."

Well, please name for me others who are standing up against Bush right now? Who is standing up against the conservatives who are trying to convince the rest of the country that they have moral mandates?

I mean--hate him all you like--but I'd hope you would rather see him win in the cultural war than the conservatives.

"Right now, he is one of the only people fighting on our general side."

In this particular instance, he's not fighting on anyone's side but his own. Drumming up votes for the People's Choice Awards hardly seems like a major slam to the Bush administration and if he wins, I'm sure they'll be quaking in their boots. Even if it wins the Oscar, what will it change? Bush was reelected and the film was already released. If Farenheit 9/11 didn't influence the country enough before, what will it do now? It's like he's still trying to win a race on a losing horse. If he wants to fight, he needs new ammunition. This is getting old.

I couldn't disagree with you more, Mister Matt. This nomination IS a slap in the face of recent rhetoric. His winning would be a huge blow to the conservative arguments of late.

And, it's all ammunition for Moore to make the sequel.

Bitch about him all you want, I think this is fantastic.

I think the fact that Passion of the Christ WASN'T nominated is a bigger slap in the face. While I applaud anti-Bush sentiment, I cannot support Moore's methods. His smug self-righteous attitude is no better than Bush's. I'm sure there are Bush supporters who feel the same way about Ann Coulter.

We watched the most interesting people thing last night and my grandfather HATES Michael Moore. When he came on all he could say was "that stupid f*ck". Good thing my grandma had the remote or he would've changed the channel.

I liked how they showed a part of Paris' video. hehe.

Moore equating the insurgents in Iraq with the minutemen shows he has lost what little mind he had. Maybe I missed something in my history books but I never heard of the Minutemen slicing off heads & using suicide bombers

Moore is a piece of human excrement. My opinion. If you like the guy great but he makes me nauseous
