Tacky, you? Never!
Slutty? Absolutely--in and out of your iPod-enabled briefs.

Please tell me that besides having yet another chat room conversation Rath is not criticizing somebody else for being a schoolmarm in this thread.

I bet Divine wore a merkin!
I wonder if those are still made.

Posted: 12/7/06 at 7:13pmYou know - Bette could be looking at this now through motherly eyes as her daughter Sophie has got to be the same age as the three stoogettes. Also - she really did not have the same paparazzi problem that today's stars have when she was out and being divinely trashy. I would imagine her escapades would be more legendary had her cooch been photographed through the rear window of a limo too!

See, Namo, it was a joke - it refers back to the fact that YOU always call ME a schoolmarm.
Again, your sense of humor completely abandons you. You really should try to lighten up - it is good for the blood pressure.

BP's fine, sense of humor, check. Generally laughing when I post here, Rath. Always laughing when posting about you. But thanks for your concern.
Back on topic, the thing about Bette is, when she was acting tacky, there was always an undercurrent of taste. Remember in Divine Madness when she said, "I know just how far I can go with the American public, kids..."? She was serious. She was expert. She has skills the Open Air Labia Society will never learn.

More opinion -
"We called renowned feminist author and culture critic Camille Paglia and asked why starlets like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan are flashing their goodies for the camera. And what does it all mean? As usual, Paglia didn't mince words.
On how it’s affecting feminism:
“These girls are lowering themselves to the level of backstreet floozies. It angers me because I fought a bitter fight to get feminism back on track and be pro-sex at the same time. This is degrading the entire pro-sex wing of feminism.”
On how it’s affecting their reputation:
“I am completely appalled by what these young women are doing because I think that they are cheapening their own image and obliterating all sexual mystery and glamour, which are the heart of the star system.”
On how Hollywood’s changed:
“These are women who are clearly out of control because the old studio era is over. The studio system...guided and shaped the careers of the young women who it signed up. It maximized their sexual allure by dealing it out in small doses and making sure you don’t have -- what has become here -- a situation of anarchy.”
On Madonna:
“Madonna was able to flash her breasts and play peek-a-boo because she is an authentic, creative artist who churns out song after song, project after project… but Britney seems like she’s lost and the career track is obliterated.”
On “The Kiss”:
“A great promise was contained in the moment when Madonna kissed Britney at the MTV Awards. She in a sense was saying,”I’m passing the torch to you.” It was a fabulous moment. Britney looked toned, in control of her career and it was up to her to take the next step. Literally from that kiss, from that moment onward, Britney has spiraled out of control. It’s like Madonna gave her the kiss of death! Britney is throwing it away!”
On Paris Hilton:
“Paris Hilton I feel a little bit more benign towards because she doesn’t really have a vocation. She is basically a celebutante. She changed fame by mining high-fashion poses learned from drag queens.”
On Lindsay Lohan:
“Lindsay is alienating too many serious actors and when you are not performing and causing problems on a shoot, that’s not good. I think Lindsay Lohan is more in the downward spiral for sure.”

"It’s like Madonna gave her the kiss of death!"
Duh!
As much as I agreed with Camille's take on the disaster that was Madonna's last tour (in fact, it read like just what I had posted about the show), she still manages to piss me off.
"It angers me because I fought a bitter fight to get feminism back on track and be pro-sex at the same time." There were many, many pro-sex lesbian feminsists who blazed that trail before Camille showed up.
Having said all that, her "Break, Burn, Blow" is one of the best books of the last 10 years.

Not that you're saying anything about anyone who almost never manages that feat . . .
Anyway, back to The Divine One - I've always been intrigued by the disparity between her real persona, and that of the creation that brought her fame. It's very interesting to hear the words of 'the librarian' connected to the woman to which the public was exposed. Although I'm not surprised at all that she feels this way, I'm a little surprised that she made it a public statement.

Posted: 12/7/06 at 11:35pmI think she included it in her act way back on the Experience the Divine tour. A whole thing about how she kicked the door open for these women to be trashy and how they didn't give her any credit. At the heart of what Miss M has always had to say about such subjects is, I believe, like what a Burlesque artist who uses wit and the art of the strip TEASE would say about an all-nude lap dancer.

I agree, Namo. It all goes back to the quote you referenced about knowing "just how far . . ."
Well, that and the whole talent gap issue.
