Of all the melodramatic, twisty, moody, bizarre, film noirs that were released during the 40s, this one's my favorite. Mainstream Hollywood at its finest.
Joan Crawford is brilliant in this, as are Ann Blyth (what a bitch) and Eve Arden. The plot takes many interesting turns that I should have expected, but didn't.

I did a book report on Mildred Pierce in the 8th grade..now THAT'S a little gay boy!
I just saw Joan in Strange Cargo and she's really quite good in it--it's a pretty tough movie...sort of an existential cross between The African Queen and Lifeboat...her chemistry with Gable is awesome--you could tell they were fuc*ing!

"Mildred Pierce" - ya gotta love it!
I chuckle when I hear the backround music from "Now Voyager" on Millie's radio at the beach house and I love Joan's half face lighting and her coast to coast shouldered fur coat.
Eve Arden and Ann Blyth are heaven.

I thought I was the only one who recognized the Now Voyager theme on the radio!! I want that beach house..by the way.
You gotta love Veda...that character was great...and Anne Blyth talks about working opposite Crawford in one of those 5 minute "memories" bits on TCM.
Lildogs....Strange Cargo is a great movie. I love how each of the characters slowly realizes who the "other guy on the boat" is. And you know the story reasoning with those two guys..the young guy and the "Bear" older guy? Please! Could it have been made more obvious??

I know, justme! I thought, "Okay, so the older guy is taking care of the younger and cutest guy in the group? I see..."
How many people here have seen Carol Burnett's "Mildred Fierce?"
While no "Went With the Wind," it's easily one of my favorite sketches and Joan herself called Carol to tell her how much she enjoyed it, though I hear she hated her Torch Song parody.

I love that scene with her and Jack Carson and she's up on the ladder, with legs crossed, showing off those shoes! I mean, who crosses on a ladder? Only Joan...
EDIT: The cheapest Joan Crawford set I found...

I love that "bitch slap" she gave Veda! A double slap, mind you!! But...remember..."I'd of rather cut off my arm than do that"...that makes it all better, right?
I'm waiting for TCM to put out a Crawford set. I have their Lon Chaney, Buster Keaton, Thin Man, Garbo set. It's only a matter of time...

Yeah...I've seen that collection. And while I enjoy campy Crawford, I am waiting for a collection of some of her BEST roles:
Paid
Chained
Posessed (the original)
Rain
Mannequin
Strange Cargo
A Woman's Face
The Women and Grand Hotel are aldready available, so I don't have to wait for them.

So do I..VHS again! I am waiting for Dodsworth, The Crowd, The Big Parade, and most of the 1930's to be released on DVD.
Can we stop making "director's cut" releases of present day movies and try to salvage some of the older movies first, please?

Posted: 10/17/05 at 6:14pmthere is a commercial TCM does whenever they have Joan crawford week, and it's her slaps from all her movies, and I just LOVE it.
