Saw the first Australian screening last night at 9.30pm, and sadly to say another over blown, over produced bore. This was film making by numbers, forgettable script, dull in many places.
I saw the first one in '99 (I think) and hated it. It made no sense to me so after that one I never hadthe desire to see any others, this one included.
Tom Cruise needs another JERRY MAGUIRE immediately.
I have so many mixed feelings about this movie. For one thing, I hate Tom Cruise and this series never interested me when it had DePalma and John Woo directing. The Abrams movie was not much better but this is Brad Bird's first live-action feature and it has Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, and Simon Pegg that makes me want to see it.
I kept on hearing that Renner would take over and this would be Cruise's swan song.
Sadly not, cruises swan song. And really this is no spoiler, since you can see it coming from the start, it leaves it wide open for a another film with the same cast.
Stummer, Brad Bird is given nothing to work with, the opening titles give away a lot of the upcoming scences in the movie.
None of the entries in this franchise ever really jazzed me, but that's a common enough sentiment. In general, I like Tom Cruise. He's often mediocre, but he's also proven on rare occasions, with the right script and director, that he's capable of really terrific things. Like a lot of people, I rolled my eyes when this was announced, but Brad Bird's involvement and the strength of the overwhelmingly -- and surprisingly -- positive early reviews have piqued my curiosity. It's been awhile since I've seen a satisfying slam-bang actioner in the cinema. I'm hopeful!
I liked the first one best but never considered myself a fan of the franchise. However this one is getting some pretty fantastic reviews so far. And I think my curiosity about what Brad Bird can do with a live action movie will overcome my hatred of Tom Cruise to go see this one in the theater.
