Misspellings, Typos & grade school discourse

Come on people. Once again, please use a dictionary or thesaurus and stop typing with your toes. Us Broadway aficionados are supposed to be well educated. Let's elevate the level of dialogue on here!

Forget well educated, even a first grader should know that "you" isn't spelled "u."

It's not that much of a problem at this board, but there are definitely a few text talkers that really get on my nerves.

Part of the problem, I think, is many times the boards are used almost as a chat room - like now, for instance. People get very caught up in their conversations and typing fast - it leads to 'less than exemplary' communication.

There's the occassional careless typo, and then there's repeated manglings of syntax and IM-speak. The latter is extremely annoying and not easily excusable.

C'mon, folks. English is my second language- if I can do it, so can everyone else.

Okay, then "u", "4", "OmG yOu wIlL nOt BeLiEVe iT!", and "omg you will not believe just happened it was so absolutely freakin awesome" are officially not cool.

But I'm not too sure. re: Misspellings, Typos & grade school discourse

I do try to avoid the misspellings by trying to have a dictionary handy. When I do find them I try to edit my message.(Does that make me AR?)
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

Their
They're
There.

Simple typos are forgivable, because everyone makes a mistake occasionally, but please know what the word means that you're trying to use. Or pick another one.

:)
It's hot and it's monotonous. I want my glasses.

U and 4 instead of you and for I can just about cope with, as Prince was doing it for years before we even had cell phones. But sentences that start with things like "does ne1 no" make me want to cry.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

Plum - not hard at all - but I'm very fond of tactile sensation - and flipping through the pages is very fun for me. I use the computer for what it does that I enjoy, but I still like to do many things manually.

Look, I try my best to spell everything right and I use spellcheck most of the time, the thing is with spellcheck is it doesn't always give you the right word. Since I can't spell I then don't know the word it gives me is wrong.

I'll give you things like "4" and "r u" or "r ya" they don't bother me but I can see how they might bother others, but spelling is a whole different issue.

I'm not criticizing people who use an actual dictionary. :) And I always prefer real books to reading books on screens. I'm just saying that if people find it too horribly inconvenient to flip through a dictionary for a word, or have poor recall of the alphabet or something, they can always get their spellings right without ever getting their butts off their chairs.

I always hold a special place in my heart for people who bring this topic up. Thank you, midtown!

re: Misspellings, Typos & grade school discourse

your and you're are the two that drive me nuts.

However, can we please, please, PLEASE, ban the use of "ruv" for "love"? It is really nothing more than annoying.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

One of the more interesting that I've only noted of late is 'should've' becoming 'should of' - I've never really seen that before.

re: Misspellings, Typos & grade school discourse

I understand how the mistake is made, but what bothers me is I don't even think they know how it would be wrong. As is often the case, I guess.

Oh yeah the whole "should of" thing makes me CRAZY.
