Hearing about stuff like this makes me not want to go to school.
From SFGate story:
"He said the gunman was dressed in a black jacket and had a mohawk haircut. Hernandez said he started to take pictures on a camera cell phone with his friend and the suspect saw them and started shooting"
This is the first thing that crossed the student's mind? To take cell phone pictures?

A similar situation happened a long time ago in Montreal, it was at a university, and 14 women in the sciences were killed- just for being women.
Canada isn't as utopic with our gun laws as we may seem. Yes we have them, but I'm sure those determined to can find ways of getting their hands on the weapons.

This is the same with all gun control laws
There are always loopholes & the ones you want to keep the guns away from are the ones who can always get them - laws or no laws

I'm from Mtl, and have many friends at that school. In fact, it's probably the school I'm going to myself next year. the gun control laws are normally very strict, and no one really knows where the shooter got the gun and why he did what he did. he exact detals of everything is unknown. One student just died, and there are many more in the hospital. We're all waiting to see what;s going to happen next. It's a terrible situation, especially since I know many people who go there. I don;t nderstand what 10 000 students could have done to 1 man.

Guns may still find their way in, but I'd be curious to know how the number of Canada's gun crimes compares with ours.

random note, but this: "In Canada, students as young as 16 can attend colleges, which generally serve as bridges between high schools and universities." is false....
Colleges in Canada are more vocational and hands-on. So a lot of university students will graduate with a BA, feel like they have no skills (like Princeton!!!) and go to college.
Anyways- it has nothing to do with the matter at hand- so as you were.
Hah...Toronto is definitely the exception to the lack of gun violence. There are shootings on my campus every year (this past year's Boxing Day Shooting is still in the headlines). Just this week three people were shot at the Delta Chelsea hotel, which is practically on campus. I definitely feel less safe here than in Israel.

These are older figures from the late 90's, but it's still interesting to note.

I'm at univeristy in Montreal, though I don't attend Dawson College or even know anyone who does.
Regardless of where this happened, it's terrible. My thoughts go out to the students and their families. I know that such instances have, tragically, happened before - more than I want to know - but I just cannot imagine what would drive a person to such an act.
At this moment, I agree with Elphaba's statement - "What is wrong with this planet".

Actually, they were stabbed. Not that that is any better...
But I know what you mean about being scared of the gun violence in Toronto now. I definately am a lot more nervous in my city.
The Montreal thing just blows my mind. I don't even have the words yet.

Although I am not in Montreal right now, I was born and lived there for 7 years and have a lot of friends and family at right now Dawson college, Concordia (a few block away from the shootings) and McGill( 2 metro stops away) right now, all of whom are thankfully ok just really shaken up.
To clarify a few things Dawson is a CGEP (Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel) not a typical college in the states or the rest of Canada. In Quebec grade school goes up to Grade 11 and then students wishing to continue to university must first do 2 years of CGEP before applying to a college or university.

My cousin's 2-year-old daughter is attending day care there. My cousin herself works there but is on maternity leave at the moment.
I have a friend that goes to the Highschool next door or pretty near the campus. He's pretty shaken up over this. My prayers are with all who were there. =(

I think they meant only Quebec.
I live in Montreal and have heard so many stories from people about people they know having been shot or having witnessed the shootings. My sister's roommate attends Dawson and had to run out right after the shootings and saw a girl lying on her stomach in a pool of blood (this is most probably the girl who passed away) and a man who got shot in the neck sitting on a chair staring at the blood on his hand in shock.
A friend of a friend got shot in the leg. She's 17, just a year older than me, and when I saw her picture in the paper the day after the shooting, that's when it really hit home for me. People close to my age being SHOT. It seemed so unrealistic at first because shootings for me only seem to happen in the movies.
There's a girl in my grade at my school whose best friend got shot in the head, neck, and leg and is in a coma. I don't know if he's going to live. The girl hasn't been at school since Wednesday.
It's such a horrible thing, and so close to home for me! It happens so randomly. The shooter never even attended Dawson and just had a lot of problems. Apparently he dreamed of dying in a hail of gunfire so he went and shot a bunch of people so that the police would come and kill him. The purpose of the shooting was for him to die. It makes no sense to me. *cries*
I'm going the Dawson open house in a month or so...I wonder if less people are going to go because of the shooting. Or perhaps more people will go just to see the place where it happened. I also wonder how many people who witnessed the shooting are going to go back to school.
