what do you think are the top couple of off broadway theater companies!? I know the Public is probably on that list, but what else? Playwrights Horizons?
I've been thinking about this lately and would like some imput from people who know that they're talking about

Well, I wouldn't rank them or anything, but any list would likely include:
The Public
Playwrights
Manhattan Theatre Club (at City Center)
Lincoln Center Theatre (Mitzi Newhouse)
BAM
The Vineyard
The Atlantic
Manhattan Class Company (MCC)
The Wooster Group
New York Theatre Workshop (though they can be very hit or miss)
The New Group
Signature (though the Vogel season last year was mostly a misfire)
Second Stage (they were known just for revivals, but with Spelling Bee they've risen in stature)

it sure aint the classic stage company -- YAWN.
So true. And Playwrights Horizons has left A LOT to be desired recently.
I think that MCC is the most consistently good company.

From Margo's list, I would agree with:
Lincoln Center
BAM
The Wooster Group
Irish Rep
I run hot and cold on The Public. Over the last several years, I think they have sacrificed the idea of what makes a good play in favor of promoting new voices.
