Most Underrated Actor of All Time? (Stage or Film)

My pick would have to be Crispin Glover. The man is just so weird, inexplicable, and odd that he just commands the screen. He is one of the very few actors who manages to weld together conventional acting and performance art. He reminds me of a sentient Andy Kaufman. Here's hoping that he gets the coveted Joker role in the next Batman flick. Who are your picks?

I would have to say Lillias White. Although she is well-respected in the theatre community, her B'way shows are limited, and she does many concerts and concert "versions" of shows. I think they need to revive these shows with her starring in them, so that she could get Top-Billing in a B'way show, and nominated for "Best Actress", which has never happened!

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

While not the most, Alison Lohman doesn't get enough credit.

Kate Winslet.

I know she is appreciated in Hollywood, but I don't know how she has been snubbed of an Oscar. I mean, just compare her performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which is my favourite performance on film I think) to her in Titanic. Both amazing in such contrasting ways.

Without a doubt it's Loretta Swit. This woman is sheer genius on stage. Anyone who saw her in SAME TIME, NEXT YEAR or EDWIN DROOD on Broadway will agree with me. This dynamic lady can get you to focus your attention on her eyelash if need be. She is a radiant star who eclipses all others. Yet do you see her regularly employed on Broadway? Noooooo. She has to settle for third rate productions in Branson, MO for her regular income. Why? Well, I'm glad you asked. It's because word has leaked out that this dynamic talent is Polish.

Yup. That's the trouble. Casting agents and producers all over are boycotting Polish performers for their own reasons. When was the last time your saw Bobby Vinton play the Palace? Here's a prime candidate to take over the role of Billy Flynn in CHICAGO and has he been asked? Absolutely not, and the reason is simple: he's Polish.

Although I like the idea of the post above for Steve Buscemi, it's only because I look like him. I'm using my favorite James Witmore character as my name here, so he's high on my list. But, I think the best actor that gets the least credit for their craft has to be Joanna Gleason.

Natalie Wood.
Here is an actress who had been acting since the age of 4 (?) starred in numerous classics including:
"Miracle on 34th Street"
"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir"
"Rebel Without A Cause"
"West Side Story"
"Splendor in the Grass"
"Gypsy"
"Love With The Proper Stranger"

She received three Oscar nominations, winning none and got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame YEARS AFTER HER UNTIMELY DEATH.

I think she is one of Hollywood's greatest UNDERRATED ACTRESSES OF ALL TIME.

I disagree Marquise... I don't think she is very talented, she wasn't the singer in any of those movie musicals and I don't respect that, but I do admit that I have not seen any of her other movies.

I agree with the comments about Kate Winslet, and hopefully Johnny Depp in the near future will also get an Oscar... same as Leonardo Dicaprio.

korenglish I beg to differ with you but she did do her own singing in "Gypsy"
She gave an incredibly sensitive performance in "Love With the Proper Stranger" her work in that film was amazing and worthy of her Oscar nomination.

In Natalie's defense she did want to do her own singing in "West Side". She gave it her best shot. She actually did record her songs but in the end they weren't good enough to be used in the film but to not respect her because she was ultimatley dubbed in the film is grossly unfair. If you're not going to respect her for that you might as well go on and not have any respect for Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady" or for that matter Deborah Kerr in "The King and I" who were also dubbed (and by the same singer who dubbed Natalie in "WSS" nonetheless).

Yes amen to Steve Buscemi. And I am shocked and horrified that Johnny Depp as yet to win an Oscar.

i would agree whole-heartedly with kate winslet... she is one of the best new/young actresses to come along in a while... she actually cares about the roles she's creating... i mean, just take this year alone and her two performances in eternal sunshine and finding neverland. simply incredible. she has great things in store...

I don't really know that she was "underrated," but I'm always suprised when talking with friends who claim to love "classic films" that more often than not, Jean Arthur's name draws a blank look . She was a brilliantly funny actress (and had one of the greatest speaking voices ever captured on film).

For me personally, Julia Ormond. She does very little big budget and more independent films. However, she's one of my favorite actress and needs to be in bigger films.

I'll second (third?) Natalie Wood. I had a shrine to her when I was in high school. She was a fantastic actress, and it's a shame she didn't leave more of a legacy.

After getting the special edition West Side Story dvd and hearing her sing "Tonight," I'm convinced that if the movie was made today they could have cleaned up her vocals in the recording studio. She wasn't nearly as atrocious as I had been led to believe.

I think Mara Wilson and Roger Bart are underrated. Mara Wilson's done some good films. Ex: Matilda, Thomas the Tank Engine. I think the reason she's underrated is because she's stopped acting as of this point. Roger Bart's had some good roles. Like Roger Bannister in The Stepford Wives, and the evil guy in Desperate Housewives as well as some good stage roles.
