I am auditioning for Hairspray soon and I've changed my song like one million times! I could play an amazing Motormouth but I'm not able to think of a song that shows that... it's to be 50's or 60's esk... I'm very much an alto with a low range and strong belt. Ideas anyone?
Lot's Wife from Caroline or Change
Maybe you can also do a song from The Color Purple. I'm actually not familiar with the score, but look into that.
Try to look for songs with a pop and gospel feel.
Why dont you just sing a Motormouth song? Like Big, Blonde and Beautiful. Or something like You're Gonna Love Me from Dreamgirls would be great. I dont think it HAS to be 50s or 60s. I know my audition song for Hairspray isn't. Just find something that shows you off!!
I'm telling you...sing....PUSH DA BUTTON! Its very motomouth like!
I've always heard to never sing something from the show so I won't rise that. It doesn't have to be from the 50's or 60's... I found this song that works really well with my voice and the content is pretty right on, it's White Milk, Red Blood from Dessa Rose but I know like nothing about the show so thats risky... what's Push Da Button from?

I Got Love from Purlie
"I Am Changing" from Dreamgirls has a similar vibe to "I Know Where I've Been," but may be a little heavy for Hairspray overall. Still though, could be good to look into as an audition song.
That would be a great one, Playbill.
What HAIRSPRAY production are you auditioning for?
Look at some of the songs from Hurcules. Not sure if it would fit into the exact genre of the song you're looking for but I do love those little singing ladies HILARIOUS.
