THE INNOCENTS (1961) - still the best (and scariest!) version of "The Turn Of The Screw")

movies that leave you with chills...

Only one...28 Days Later! Now that movie is freaky because in today's world something like that could happen where the whole world could be totally wiped out.

Interesting fact here...I live in Salem MA (you know...the whole witch thing) in a two family house. The guy who lives above me with his family is the son of William Peter Blatty who of course is the author of the Exorcist. They have so many signed pictures of the cast (including Linda puking) that I'm suprised that their four year old kid doesn't get scared. Just thought I'd let everyone know. Oh...and by the way...he plays Tubular Bells (the Exorcist theme song) on Halloween. Fun!

Broadway Bulldog, we have very similar tastes - I think The Haunting is one of the best psychological thrillers ever made...the book is amazing also. (of course I am talking about the Original Haunting - with Julie Harris...not the laughable remake in recent years - what WERE they thinking?)

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

I agree with you RedHot. The original "The Haunting" is definitely a classic as is Shirley Jackson's novella.

There have been only very few remakes that were better than the original film so I avoided the remake of "The Haunting."

When I was a child (I was a child once) the cheesey film version of Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum" scared me for many many nights. Now as an adult, well, we won't go there...LOL.

"aka "Will Our Friends Succeed in Finding Their Friend Who Disappeared In Africa?," "Kei fung dik sau" aka "Finding Mr. Perfect," "Finding Interest," and "Finding His Voice."

In a different way than scary movies, the one film which caused the greatest shock for me was Requiem For A Dream. Even after seeing it a few more times, the reaction is the same. Absolutely the most effective film in getting its point across I've ever seen.

A movie that really affected me, but not due to its horror but due to its moving, sad climax, was My Life Without Me.. a very low budget arthouse film about a woman dying of cancer who decides not to tell anyone. On the way home I was in such a daze on the bus thinking about how affected I was that I almost missed my stop.

The original Village of the Damned.

Oh, and the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

When you're a child those are two really freaky movies.

Hell, even as an adult!

Problem with the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers is that it is done in flashback so you knew from the beginning the Kevin Mc Carthy character gets away.

Another one is Mystery of the Wax Museum ( remade as House of Wax) His burned face is not shown until the end which is much more effective
