I couldn't wait to see this movie ever since I read the book last year. I found the book (also by Steve Martin) to be incredibly charming, and the same can definitely be said of the movie.
A little uneven, a little stagey and scripty at points - but I still adored every minute of it. Claire Danes is excellent in this - she's truly radiant. I absolutely adored Jason Schwartzmann. He's so ackwardly sexy in the strangest way - and it works so well. Most of the comedy here comes from him, and he's great. Steve Martin is also - as always, reliable and strong.
It's not a typical romantic movie, and it doesn't turn out how you might imagine. Slightly thought provoking, slightly happy, and even slightly depressing. Definitely see this - and read the book - it's joyously charming.
I cannot wait to see this! I thought Danes was excellent in Romeo + Juliet, and I've been waiting for her to get a role like this. I'm also a Schwartzmann fan.
Critics were torn on the score. What did you think?
The score is redundant, maybe a tad melodramatic, but I thought it was gorgeous.
Let me know what you think!
Yeah, I heard clips from the score, and I thought it was really nice.
What do you think: Claire Danes = Globe nominee?

Yea it definitely is. Moments of it are very reminiscent of some of the earlier scenes in the PROOF movie. It was VERY clear that they were reading from a script.
Broadway: MAYBE. The Musical/Comedy category generally has less competition than the other, so it's very likely. Oscar, NO - but Golden Globe - I'll say probably. Although, the genre of COMEDY isn't entirely fitting here.
I haven't seen it yet, but I have a feeling that they'll go with Musical/Comedy on this one. In fact, I'm still wondering why About Schmidt was in the Drama category.
I saw Shopgirl last Friday (movie hopping after seeing Capote...also very good!) and I really liked it. I'm generally not a big Claire Danes fan, but I enjoyed her here. I also LOVED Jason Schwartzman! How great was he in this movie?!?!? I'm tempted to go back and see it again just for him. He was too, TOO funny!
I would say he deserves a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor (Musical or Comedy.) Thus far, I would say he's definitely likely to get one, but who knows what the upcoming months will bring.
Saw this yesterday and loved it. My favourite "type" of film, actually- one that actually examines human relationships in-depth.
It's a sweet little fable of a movie.

In that case, you might also enjoy The Squid and the Whale, and The Weather Man.
Thanks, I'll check them out!
My fave film of last year is Before Sunset.
I adore Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. I love them.
I'm obsessed with Before Sunset. Actually, I was in Paris recently, and I went to Le Pure Cafe, where they sit down for a drink. It's the perfect cafe.
There are some amazing moments in that film.
Saw it today, and I really liked it. It had the kind of quirky and sweet sense of humor that I love. It was also really sad in some parts, and the switches in tone were handled pretty well.
Claire Danes: What an actress! She's getting a Globe nod for sure. Martin was good, and Schwartzman is entertaining as always. The score got in the way at times, but it was still really beautiful.

BEFORE SUNSET is amazing.
I really enjoyed the movie and thought Claire Danes was luminous. One of the most honest and gorgeous performances I've seen all year. Although not nearly as good, very reminiscent of LOST IN TRANSLATION at times.
Munk-
I thought you didn't like Before Sunset. Was that someone else, or... Never mind.
MEF-
Now that you mention it, I can almost see Martin and Danes playing Bob and Charlotte.
No, I think SUNSET has the most brilliant screenplay in a long, long while.
loved, loved the book and can't wait to see the movie.

I saw the movie last night and really liked it. The only problem was that I read the book last week, so I got distracted by the differences. I wasn't even meaning to read it, it just appeared on the library shelf, and I figured "what the heck?" I really enjoyed the book, but I sort of wish I had waited longer before seeing the movie so I could take it in more. Obviously, the movie couldn't have the detailed character histories of the book, but I missed the character background, especially with Lisa. I thought all of the stuff about the way her mind worked was really intersting in the book, and the movie had almost none of it. I was also really confused about why they left out her line at the end of the Jeremy's phone call. Without it, the scene ended a little awkwardly. The transitions were a little rough throughout the movie, imo. I also didn't really like the way Mirabelle's depression was downplayed in the movie. Despite these things, I loved it. I thought Claire Danes was perfect, and even though she didn't have as much material to work with as she could have, she embodied everything about the character that was in the book, even the stuff left out. Jason Schwartzman was fantastic as well, and Steve Martin worked better than I thought he would. Nothing against him, but I just didn't picture him as Ray when I read the book.
