My Cat is kind of a newcomer to Broadway show tunes. He doesn't like crowds so he's never been to a show, but he listens to a lot of show tunes and loves movie musicals. "Sound of Music" is his favorite (He's a big R&H fan) and "My Favorite Things" is his favorite song.
So we're watching TV the other night and suddenly- "My Favorite Things" starts up- it's in a commercial. For Dove Shampoo. Only the lyrics have been rewritten so it's about the shampoo. My cat is outraged. He storms up to the TV and begins batting the screen as if to say "No! No! No!"
Obviously, he's mad that they took the pro-cat, anti dog message of the tune and co-opted it to sell shampoo of all things- a product he has absolutely no use for. I have tried to explain to him about heirs and song copyrights and monetarizing the assets of a corporation, but all he knows is that his favorite song has been stripped of meaning and is being prostituted to sell hair products.
SO how can I explain this to him? Any ideas? Right now he's pacing, his tail whipping back and forth. I hate to see him like this. He's acting angry but I know inside he's hurt. Very hurt.

Incidentally, he's recently come around on Carol Channing who he previously loathed. He's still no fan but has come to appreciate her comic timing in "Dolly."
joe, put the cat in the other room before continuing.
is he gone?
seriously.
well, ok then.
i'm sorry, but you're going to have to either do him in or put him up at a shelter for adoption by europeans or africans or autralians or antarcticans. he has developed a grudge and when cats get this way, there's nothing that can be done. it's only a matter of time before he begins blaming you for this and then no amount of meow-mix will save you. for your own safety i am telling you to act quickly before he - oh f*ck, he's right there!!! run, joe! ruuuuuuuuuunnnnnnnnnn!!!!!

I'm okay with the Dove commercial, I've just never understood why it seems to be considered a Christmas song.

My cat agrees with you Phyllis. Not a Christmas song.
Jajajaja! I remember you cat being freaked out by Carol. This was many years ago. I recall feeling an affinity to it 'cause I also was not a fan of hers.
Regarding "My Favorite Things", could it be that he's become accustomed to Julie? Maybe no other voice will do.

I don't think so Stagey- there was a commercial a while back that featured kids getting their driver's license picture taken to the sounds of a rather modern re-make of "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" that he LOVED.
Q, is that a still from the movie Teeth?
