My son is headed off to college as a freshman soon and the program he is in required us to buy an Apple G4 Powerbook and recommended an iPod for media files.

Because school isn't already expensive enough.... lol

Hmmm...just checked the Apple website and I couldn't find the deal, either. At the time we bought it (about 6 weeks ago) they were featuring the rebate program on the 20Mg iPod but they were out of stock so they upgraded him to the 40Mg at the same price. Maybe they overran their estimates and ended the deal. You're right, BW, his 17" Powerbook is an amazing computer and his dad is thinking he'd better have it padlocked and chained at school...

That's nothing, CJR.
I know a girl who is entering college this year to study computer animation.
The university whe is attending required her to purchase a computer through them, which they would install all the necessary programs and whatnot onto to customize it for the computer animation program.
The pricetag?
Almost $3500.

No joke, definitely do that. I know a few people who have had their laptop stolen from their rooms. One girl I know had her laptop stolen TWICE. Definitely safeguard that computer by chaining it up to the desk and putting an alarm on, that's what I currently have with my laptop while I'm living in residence.

I currently have a PC laptop, and what amazes me about the Mac ones is how bright their screens are. They don't have the LCD problem that most PC laptops do. No matter what angle you view the Mac laptop screen, you always get a perfect and clear image.

Well, that does seem a LITTLE high...but in reality, when there's a need for a lot of graphics capabilty you're going to be talking something like the Powerbook G4 and that's about $2600 right out of the box before any upgrades or software. Trust me, I have the VISA bill to prove it!

Ah, I love the iPod. I wish it had longer battery life, but otherwise it's great. I never use the white earphones, though, because my ears are too small. :)

And the thing I really like is iTunes. What a nice piece of software, especially compared with the **** that is MusicMatch.

The new iPods have 12-hour batteries.

And I read somewhere that there's a website where you can purchase songs for 49 cents that work on iTunes.
Anybody know what that is?
