is sick
he's a 9 year old beagle and he just hasn't been right the last couple days, and how he has this bad rash on his underbelly...i'm just so sad and scared and I can't sleep, so here I am posting. Kind of pathetic, isn't it?

Awwwe! I have a really fat 8 year old beagle, and he's had quite a few accidents so far. I know how you feel... I mean, my dog got ripped open by a pit bull once on a Sunday, and we had to rush around for an hour holding his side together while we searched for a veterinary office that was open. It was so scary... I was very, very upset.
Take him to the vet. Maybe it's not serious...

Can you get him in to the vet sooner? Did you describe to the vet what the symptoms are? Maybe they can give you some tips on keeping him comfortable until his appt.
Sending happy healthy puppy thoughts your way!

EverythingisRENT, so sorry to hear about your beagle buddy. If you can, try calling your vet and seeing about getting him in sooner. My little dachshund had an underbelly rash once, and it was a parasite that was easily treated with Revolution. I was worried sick, and it turned out to be a simple cure.
*Sending good thoughts your way.*
Keep us posted.

Posted: 8/17/05 at 10:59amThanks, guys! HeartinNYC, can you tell me if your dog was really itchy from this parisite?? My dog's acting like he has a bad case of fleas or something, and he keeps rubbing his muzzle, too, so the parasite thing might not be far off! Unfortunately the vet was booked solid today, but luckily Howie seems to be doing okay now, so he'll go first thing in the morning. I feel a bit better now! I'll update sometime tomorrow when I hear something...

Posted: 8/17/05 at 11:36amEverythingisRENT, Howie's symptoms sound very much like Muffin's. She scratched her belly as best she could; and kept rubbing her muzzle against the carpet in order to relieve itching. She also wound up losing a little fur on her face and ears, which really had me worried. The Revolution took care of it and she is back to her puppy self. It is common for hounddogs like ours to get skin conditions, so I'm sure Howie will be just fine. Please let us know how your little guy does!

Posted: 8/17/05 at 11:49amoh I do feel better now! NYC, I just have a few more quesdtions: was your Muffins rash centered around her, um, privates? That's where Howies is, and it seems just a bit swollen. He's also been licking his front paws, and the whole thing has just made him lethargic. Does that sound like what your Muffin had??
#15re: My poor doggy...
Posted: 8/17/05 at 11:55amRENT, Muffin's rash was actually centered around her belly itself, but a parasite can center itself anywhere. Muffin was VERY lethargic, preoccupied and unhappy when she had this - I was really concerned about her. Howie might be licking his paws and everything because of a generalized itchiness that is kind of driving him nuts. In the meantime, do you have oatmeal soap or shampoo? It might be soothing for him to have a little oatmeal bath in tepid water (pat dry.)

Okay i'm definetely thinking he has a parasite now...thank you so much again, NYC! Unfortunately, we don't have oatmeal..I wish I could make my baby more comfortable but he honestly doesn't even want to be petted right now, poor thing. I'm sure the vet will give him Revolution or whatever and he'll be all better!
Of course it didn't help that last night my dad said, "he doesn't have much longer to live now..."
But my dad's not a vet, so there! Thanks again, everyone for making me a little less scared!!

Good luck, RENT. Here's one for you - my cockatiel was hit by a CAR and lived! A friend took him outside for air and even though his wings were clipped, he glided off and smacked
into a sedan. The bird had a gash under his eye, but he was FINE. I was sure he was a goner.
Have faith! And Dads are often the Voice of Doom...he's probably just trying to prepare you in case of the worst.
Keep being sweet to Howie in the meantime.

Good news: He's okay!! Apparently, something bit him that caused a major reaction and he just spread it by licking himself. So we're getting the medicine he needs and it'll all clear up! Whew, I feel so much better, thanks for all the good thoughts, guys!
