The Walt Disney Co. will no longer produce direct-to-video sequels of its animated features, according to Disney watcher Jim Hill. Hill, who has had a hit-and-miss record in reporting on inside decisions at the company, said that Sharon Morrill, president of DisneyToon Studios, has been forced to step down as part of the decision to shut down the group that produces the DVD sequels. Prior to Disney's acquisition of Pixar, Pixar executives Steve Jobs and John Lasseter had publicly complained about the quality of the sequels, maintaining that they undercut the value of the original features. Disney executives had responded that the sequels had proved to be enormously successful for the studio. According to Hill, Lasseter made the decision to halt further production of the DVD sequels and fire Morrill after viewing a "work-in-progress version" of The Tinkerbell Movie, which Hill described as "an awful mess." Hill said that Lasseter complained to Disney chief Robert Iger that the movie was "virtually unwatchable." As a direct result of that meeting, Hill wrote, "some $30 million worth of animation had to be scrapped."
Yay! :)
Disney To Halt DVD Sequels
Thank GOD!
I wasn't happy with the fact they were giving Tinkerbell a voice (I love Britney Murphy, but...).
It also means that they are caring more about the quality and not quantity.
Good for them.

I despise Disney sequels. Pixar is good...original Disney movies are good...anything made after I turned 7 by Disney is not good. It's terrible.
Disney movies sell well because they are "electronic babysitters."
Until parents stop having their DVD players entertain their children as substitute "quality time," you'll be seeing PLENTY more of these straight-to-DVD sequels. The money's too good.
And that's kinda sad.
the sequels were horrible. Even the better ones were sloppy. I'm glad someone finally put art before commerce.
I actually think they will make more money this way.
I have a lot of friends in the animation and they had two very clever names for those divisions:
They arm that was working on Toy Story 3 was called "Pixaren't"
The sequels were referred to as "dreck-to-video"

Oh PLEASE. It's fracking DISNEY.
Disney has produced some of the most heartfelt and beautiful films of all time. And I don't mean in the last 20 years. I mean films like Fantasia and Snow White.
Snow White part 2 would surley devalue the achievement of the original.
Thank God. Awful, awful stuff.
With Walt gone, there is no hope for the company. Things were looking up with their string of animated musical hits (LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY & THE BEAST, ALADDIN, etc.) but once that first major sequel was abound (THE RETURN OF JAFAR) there was no stopping the madness.
I'm curious to see THE TINKER BELL MOVIE. I've heard that the first two cuts of the film were "unwatchable," too. Thank God they won't see the light of day. IF Tinker Bell must have her own franchise, let it be of the same quality as the original PETER PAN movie by Disney.
As for the "no more direct-to-DVD sequel" announcement, I call BS! Now they'll be bringing them to cinemas, first! Just a publicity shmam.
Oh, finally some has heard my prayers!!!! thank the stars!
I have been so against this damn Tinkerbell movie, I am so relieved! I literally did a little skip/hop/jump thing when I heard the news i was so happy!
