I completely agree about the leather outfit meeting the President. It was strictly for shock value and completely counterproductive. I'm not saying we need to be conformists, but if your only purpose is to stoke the fire, then you burn instead of build. But then again, this is the age of cyncism. To have a positive outlook and desire goodness is frowned upon in our society at the moment. Now we only live to shock, offend, and destroy anything that would offer a momentary boost to the self-esteem. If we want to find equality, then we need to show the rest of the country the good we have to offer. In a small superficial way, Queer Eye has accomplished this and is one of the reasons for its success. If we only display fetishes, alcohol, drugs, and narcissism, then it is what we will be remembered for (one of the reasons I hate Queer as Folk).

But I would love to hear the alterior suggestions of motive for the Presidential leather-wear. Never said I was an assimilationist, that's your fondness of labels, not mine. You sure make rather large leaps. I hate the popularity of the assimilation I see every day in "straight acting/appearing" descriptions of gay men. We can be individualistic and productive at the same time without having to conform. The leather-clad individual was representing a group. Personally, I would have chosen a different representative, but that's just me. I think it would be nice to try and take it one step at a time. We are struggling with all gays right now. Let's work on that before we try and force feed acceptance of the leather bears, drag queens, circuit boys and all various subsets.

I have no interest in selling anyone "down the river" and the momentary boost of self-esteem is regarding the cynical, selfish and mean behavior that has become a trend in American society over the last decade.

I never said anything about "gay rights". That would be your common misinterpretation of my posts. I specifically spoke of equality. I'm not selling out anyone or anything as I have no agenda, merely an opinion. I didn't say anything against drag queens or anyone else. I am completely aware of the events of Stonewall. I am just offering my thoughts on a possible suggestion to strengthen the idea of acceptance and equality for gays and lesbians in this country. Jarry Falwell in a T-shirt with bleeding Jesus will react with disdain to RuPaul in full drag and vice-versa. In my eyes, this is counter-productive and does nothing to promote acceptance of Gays (or Christians, for that matter). I didn't think it would require this much explanation.

I am speaking of GAY EQUALITY. Leather is a fetish, not exclusively gay. The same can be said of cross-dressing. I am neither and I personally am represented by neither. For someone so fond of semantics, you certainly take a lot out of context.
