NYC Q's

NYC Q's#1

Posted: 5/1/07 at 10:54pm

I tried doing a search on this (NY tourist sites), assuming that it has been asked, yet I couldn't rake anthing up. So here goes...

If you were in New York City and had TWO free afternoons, ONE free morning, and THREE free nights.... what would you do???

(excluding Broadway... already seeing three shows!)

I've already done the Statue of Liberty, the Met, and The Radio City Music Hall among a few other things on a previous trip...

Oh ya! And what are the best places to eat in the Times Square and Rockafeller Center areas? (not too pricy NYC Q's )

Ellis Island

I second The Cloisters. And I'm a geek, so I really love the American Museum of Natural History and especially the Hayden Planetarium.

No ericaamato, I LOVE the Museum of Natural History
I recommend that!

and you could spend some time in Central Park & the zoo there.
The Bronx Zoo is a bit outside but I love it there too.
Sardi's is nothing special in case you were thinking of that, my parents went there after prom and there was a bug in her salad.
And you could go take a moment at ground zero if you wanted to as well.

Goshen doesn't do High-School-shows.

StarStruckGB: hehehe...Yay! And I was going to recommend the Bronx Zoo, too! nyc q's

And the Central Park Zoo is adorable. It's been completely refurbished, and is really lovely.

How do you have three evenings free if you're seeing three shows? Are you here for six evenings total?

If it's your thing I would use your one morning to do the studio audience of The View or Regis, or the Today Show crowd, or whatnot- that's completely not my scene, but I know a lot of visitors love that stuff.

I would use my one morning to wander either Central Park, or Strand Books, depending on weather.

Afternoons: The Met or the Natural History Museum, you can't go wrong with either one. Or I would also suggest the New York Historical Society- it's not as large as the other museums, but they have this 'Slavery in NY' exhibit that they've been doing that I have found absolutely inspiring and heartbreaking. Explore Union Square. Do a Greenwich Village walking tour (you can do this yourself, get a map and explore, or you can pay to go on a tour). Take the train into Brooklyn and walk back over the Brooklyn Bridge (so that you're facing the Manhattan skyline) at sunset- it's the most beautiful view ever.

evenings: try out tkts and take a chance on a fourth show? do the 'night loop' tour of the double decker bus tour, or the evening trip on one of those boat tours? (it's fun to see the city all lit up at night.) if you're going to be at Rock center I've never done it but I hear the view from Top of the Rock is amazing.

There's no need to eat in Times Square. :) Ok- yes, try the cheesecake in Junior's, but there is no need to eat in Times Square. I would eat at the Cosi up on 50th (it's a chain, but it's actually pretty good) or maybe Metro Marche in Port Authority, and that's about it. Oh- and Blockheads, for $3.50 margaritas and good food too. Or John's Pizzeria. But I think that's it.
I work in this area, and I don't eat at any of the places in Times Square for lunch- and I am not even really a 'food snob,' but you've got Little Italy or the UWS or so many other places that are just a hop on the subway away, just don't do Times Square.

How do you be part of an audience for one of the TV shows? I'm also coming to NY soon and that kinda sounds fun!

J'ai compris tous les mots, j'ai bien compris, merci.............

link to old tv audience tickets thread below- there's links to ticket request pages and such there. (yes- this is me being too lazy to copy/paste links again. :)) There's some other threads on here too about this, from folks who have done the show thing with reports on their experiences, wait times, etc. Again, not my thing, but it is one of those things you should do once just for fun or something. Maybe.

Also fyi for a studio audience type situation- don't wear white and/or anything with a huge old logo on it, as that's what gets you sent to sit furthest from the front/on camera section as possible.

While the Metropolitan IS amazing, I find the Natural History boring and it's musty and hot--if you're an art fan, do the MoMA or the Guggenheim if you must do a museum.

I took my mom on one of those double-decker bus tours and I actually enjoyed it--it was about $36/each i think...

You might also think about going to a comedy club instead of seeing a show--there are alot of great ones here

Ellis Island can also be a bit of a snooze--there's just not alot over there once you're on it

I'd suggest a walking tour of Chinatown, little Italy and the LES...I think it's the most interesting area of MYC

You might also try doing a drag brunch--they're alot of fun and not pricey--LIPS or Lucky Cheng's...

If you're a sex in the City fan, there's a walking tour for that show and I think Seinfeld as well--there are also movie location walking tours too

My favorite resturaunt near Times Square is called "Pakistani Resturaunt." It's ubercheap and quite an experience. It's on 39th and 9th Ave. A bit out of the way, but it's under $10. It's not fancy by any means, but if you wanna try something different and more NYC check it out. The chicken keema is my personal fav. They also have prayer mats in the back.

Check out South Street Seaport, it's beautiful down there on a nice day, and Pier 17 has a few restaurants and the surrounding neighborhoods have a lot of stores.

I would suggest the Empire State Building, The Museum of Natural History, and Ellis Island for activites.

For meals, I would highly suggest the Stage Deli for a lunch.

It would be agony to limit myself to three shows. I just keep hitting TKTS and seeing more shows.
