In the Upper West Side from the 90's up to Columbia there's nearly one store closed or that has failed to rent for each block up Broadway, a sign of the current economic climate.

Just as an informal poll, what's it like in your neighborhood for vacant storefronts right now? Just as bad, or better than this?

above 145th on broadway is not so great. But things are looking up, they've started to do rennovations in some of the vacant store fronts.

I noticed so many stores closed down starting in the 90's on the West Side. Very sad and depressing.

The big one down in the Seaport area is The Strand. They closed their doors, so has many of the smaller shops on Fulton Street due to the economy and the constant construction happening down there with the new subway station/LIRR hub.

On Maiden Lane, my favorite coffee shop "Klatch" closed. It was great as did Mardi Gras Pizza which had this great slice with shrimp and andouille sausage. The Casual Grill closed as did a Korean restaurant both on John Street.
A lot fewer people working and those who are bringing lunch to work.

Npne of the stores on Corine's Corner are empty. Most of them are selling snow globes.

Here in the w. village, it seems a little worse, in that there are some blocks with more than one or two vacant stores.

Now that just about every shoe store on 8th st. closed, it's like ghost town there.

But we may have weathered the storm. I think the worst is over. Occasionally you can see new businesses opening.

Must be that Diet of Worms you've been on, Dolly.

The Diet of Worms played a very significant role in Church history. It should not be taken lightly. It should, however, be taken with Tums.

Bring on the hairshirts.

Now go spock missing stores that are the eyesore of blackened teeth to the once-was smile of the neighborhood.

(The Worms requested a grungy metaphor.)

The only store within walking distance of where I live is a deli, but the Indian place in my mom's town seems to be gone. Their bread (and food in general) was so good, I need to find a new place. And I noticed that the soap place in St. Mark's is gone too.

they're putting new flooring into several abandoned commercial places around the block from me. So happy to see something being done with the vacancies
