Saw sign on # 7 train today that due to never ending maintenence there would be delays on # 7 train
The sign said, as an alternative take ( you guessed it ) the # 7 train. Is it any wonder the subway is as bad as it is ?
An old favorite of mine was E & F trains would stop on the express track. Well duh E & F trains are express trains & normally stop on the express track. Ya gotta love these guys for bringing stupidy to a high art

Posted: 3/4/05 at 6:27pmHere we go again with the complaining...any other L.A. people want to scream everytime someone in NY doesn't appreciate how convenient and great their transportation system is? If it sucks anywhere, it sucks here...last week it took me about 2.5 hours to travel 15 miles...ugh!! Now that's a pain, and I didn't have any other choice but to travel by car. No bus, no subway...Ok, I'll shut up now...but seriously, it's not THAT bad for you guys, is it?

Posted: 3/4/05 at 6:32pmGirl; don't get me started on LA public transportation. But it is true; every time I am in NY I wonder if the citizens know how good they have it.

Be careful what you wish for - you may get it
Seriously, I know LA is very large & drawn out. Still, I have grown up with the subway system & seen how the fare constantly goes up & the service goes down. They just had a picture in a local paper of a token booth clerk sleeping on the job right after the fare went up for the 2 nd time in 2 years
The workers do not care & goof off every chance they get. Hence why I am irked sometime but you, in LA, I feel your pain.

I was quite impressed with the NYC subway system. Of course I don't live there, but it certainly beats BART and MUNI in San Francisco.
Of course NYC doesn't beat Vienna or Munich or Paris.......but I think for the US they are damn good!

DC's Metro is horrible. Yes, it's clean and isn't skanky like the subway in NYC, but you don't want to even bother during the "Orange" security levels. I was once on a train where someone opened the door between the cars (which you're not allowed to do), which set off an emergency alarm and we ended up skipping 4 stops on the Red line. They assumed that the emergency alarm going off means that there is a security risk or something, so they want you as far away from downtown as possible before they send a worker back to check what the problem is. Not like we hadn't already missed our stop...
Let's not even get into Georgetown- 20 blocks to the nearest stop. Tons of fun in the rain.
Wanting life but never knowing how

Posted: 3/4/05 at 9:06pmI LOOOOOOOVE the Washington metro system. It's so civilized. New York's subway is a marvel of design and urban planning, but I agree with Mr. Roxy that it is incredibly poorly run by the MTA. You never know how long you have to wait for a train, the stations are filthy or completely run down, MTA employees treat you like a second class citizen when you have to ask a question, and when there is a problem on a train, they'll keep you sitting there for 15-20 minutes, with no explanation.

Add to that insipid announcemnts on the PA system about"Thanks for riding with the MTA, & we want your service to be safe & on time & thanks for your patience & cooperation while sitting on a stalled train
Will you ever get an announcemnt that a train is approaching. No you are left in the dark standing on a platform waiting like a putz
The subway used to be great. The transit workers , much like many city & state employees, could care less about doing a good job. Just put in their 20 years & get their tax free tax payer funded pension. All they will continue to do, year after year, is ask for more & if taxes have to constantly go up they could care less. The subways continue to deteriorate & Mad Mike wants to bring the Olympics here. Give me a break. What is he smoking ?

Tell me about L.A...
The public transport here is hideous. Someone once said "L.A. is New York lying down." (I've been living here for too long and have had it.) I'm moving to NY/NJ within the next 6 months, and I'll be so happy to not have to drive anywhere. I'm not much for L.A.'s transportation system.
