I'm going to be in the city tomorrow for Broadway in Bryant Park then I have to get to south street seaport for Bodies and back to Broadway for Xanadu and I know a taxi would take to long...
Can anyone help, please? I'm good with the City, but not the subways.
If anyone knows which train and which direction I'll be heading I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

Posted: 8/13/08 at 11:22pmI believe your best off sticking with the blue line (A,C or E trains). I think the E will take you to South St. Seaport. So go down to 8th Ave. and 42nd St. take the E train downtown to the Seaport, and then just take it back for Xanadu. On your way back uptown, if you get on at the front of the train, the exit out of the subway will put you directly on 44th st. for the theater.

defying - think your best bet is the 2 or 3 line am i not correct? other new yorkers help me out? i think the closest subway stop to the south street seaport is the 2 or 3 train. The A-C-E does not look like its your best bet.
2 or 3 leaves from 42nd street - times square (which is also about 2 blocks from bryant park).
enjoy broadway in bryant park - 42nd street and 5th
then walk down to times square - 42nd and 7th
go down to south street seaport
hop back on 2 or 3 back to times square
you're back at xanadu
i'll be at bryant park too... hopefully its not canceled. their website lists it as still scheduled.

Posted: 8/14/08 at 1:20amHey original poster, one of the best ways to learn the subways is to get a pocket map (one that doesnt fold out) and study the map at the station, and then just try your best to figure it out, and dont freak out if you get lost---its the only youll really learn. I somehow managed to ride the subway for years and I never could figure out the difference between the 4/5/6 or the A/C/E until my uncle visited and just randomly pointed it out. Just keep giving yourself subway experience and pretty soon it'll be second nature.

I would think that the best bet is either the E or the 1 2 or 3 trains. It is true that the 7th avenue line ( 1 2 & 3 trains) get off closer to the Seaport then the 8th avenue lines (A C & E trains). But, keep in mind that you can get off the 8th avenue line at the corner of 44th and 8th. That subway entrance/exit is literally on the corner two doors down from The St. James. I would say its six of one half a dozen of another to be honest with you. I would also use hopstop and see what they suggest you should use.
Believe it or not I have run into New Yorkers who have lived in the city for years and years on end. Who still aren't sure how to to a particular place in the city and hopstop has come in very handy.

If I am at the Imperial Theatre (249 W. 45th St), which subway would I take to get to Penn Station?
Where is the closest subway station to that theatre?
How far is Battery Park/Statue of Liberty from Penn Station? Would I take #1 to S. Ferry? How far is the walk from S. Ferry to Battery Park?
If we leave Penn Station at 12:30 to go to Statue of Liberty, do you think we will have enough time to explore without being rushed since it closes at 5:00.
And....where is the Christmas Tree/Ice Skating Rink located?
From the tree/skating rink, what subway would I take back to Penn Station?
Thank you.

If you're at the Imperial you can walk to Penn Station (12 short blocks down 7th or 8th Ave).
There's a subway entrance just west of the St James at 44th and 8th, but you can probably get to Penn faster (and cheaper) by walking. I do it all the time.

Thank you Hank. I was actually going to walk (I know it isn't all that far) but my friend is coming up from Florida and has never left the state so she wants to "experience" the subway.
Thanks for the info

Which subway would I take from the tree to Penn Station?
Where would I get the subway? At 42nd street?
Is it worth going to see the tree/ice skating rink if we aren't ice skating and the tree isn't lit?

Posted: 11/16/08 at 1:34amFor the least amount of walking, walk 1/2 block to 5th Ave and 50th after you see the tree and take the M4 or Q32 bus. They both go down 5th Ave and turn on 34th St and stop across from Penn Station.

Posted: 11/16/08 at 2:34amTo go from the Imperial Theatre to Penn Station by subway, walk to 8th ave from the theatre, go to 44th St and enter the subway station there for the A-C-E train downtown. They will all take you to Penn Station. You might want to walk down the platform a little bit to get close to the middle of the train which should let you out right around the Penn Station area. And only ride it one stop.

Posted: 11/16/08 at 10:20amYou can get the 1 train at 50th & 7th ave & take it to Penn Station. That is the closest subway stop to the tree.
