If I wanted to ride with other people, I'd take a bus or the subway.
"The Taxi and Limousine Commission plans to introduce two pilot programs that will transform many taxi rides into something like car-pooling with strangers, with two or more passengers riding together to nearby destinations."
"Under one proposal, up to 1,000 yellow cabs would be equipped with meters that could calculate two fares at once, allowing cabbies to stop en route and pick up additional passengers."

It's better for the environment?
It saves gas?

I'd think someone on a fixed income in a tiny overpriced apartment would be in favor of something like this.
I think Goth ought to use his social security checks to buy an SVU, since he seems hellbent on being as detrimental to the environment as he possibly can.

God forbid, that would be so horrible for you.....having to mix with the lower classes. Oh, the very nerve! Having to deal with strangers, why the very idea is just SO beneath you.
Why they may even be foreigners with ways different than our own. The very idea, Hrumph!
I wouldn't mind it. You may meet some interesting people. Or not.

Is it Obama's fault?
Also, it sounds like it would be only certain cabs.
I think it's a great idea. I've shared cabs before, when someone else was trying to get one and we were going in the same direction. Worked out just fine.
I don't think it would be that bad. Besides, it's only one or two people, versus how many on the subway or bus.

I hope none of you get into a taxi with Patti "I've got to get to work, get out of my way" LuPone.

I'm not on a fixed income. If you're going to stalk me, at least get your facts straight.
Just keep a copy of The London Cast recording of Sunset Boulevard in your pocket and ask her to sign it if that happens.
I remember my mom telling me that this was mandatory during WWII - when gas was rationed. You'd get in a taxi and tell them where you wanted to go and they couldn't move until another passenger came along who was going in the same direction. This isn't nearly as bad as that and yet somehow the country survived it then.
Who can afford a cab these days under any circumstances?

Washington DC cabs do (or at least did the last time I was there) routinely.
Who knows, you might even get lucky!
I'm not riding with Corine ... you can't make me.
But she might interview you for her show!
I'm still waiting to be interviewed!

This is horrible and stupid.
They'll open themselves to lawsuits when women or children who are forced to share a ride get molested or when one forced ride sharer gets attacked or robbed by the other, locked in a moving cab in a small enclosed space.
There are a lot of criminal and just plain nasty people especially in New York that you don't want to be sharing a cab with. The driver will be concentrating on driving and won't be able to see anything and they are separated from the passengers.
At least on a subway there are generally other people around and you can get up and move away from creeps.
I had a very nasty hostile cab driver harrass me to try to make me share a ride once which he had no right to do and I got out--I should not have paid him. What a creep. I won't share a backseat with a potential creep--think about it.

Ooooh, nomdeplume...what if they SMELL?
I didn't see anything about forcing women and children (or men, for that matter) to share rides.
It sounds like it's an option.
I told her to take mine off her site.
Somehow, whenever you googled my name, HER site was awlways the first thing to pop up.
Media whore...
Goth when you say, "I'm not on a fixed income."
Yes, we know...
So, if you don't want to help out the environment and maybe make a new friend, then don?t, and walk.
Or they might get in the cab with someone who has multiple personalities.
It works well in other countries. People will wait at a taxi stand where taxis line up for custom. It is optional to share rides and the rate is a little lower when you do share. If the taxi is moving and someone is flagging a taxi, the driver will ask if the rider would like to share a ride. If yes, the rate for the rider drops while the ride is being shared.
In this way the rider has the option to not share a ride with someone who's breath smells of bourbon and who's trousers are soaked with urine stains.
