Obama’s Support Softens in Poll, Suggesting a Peak Has Passed
By ADAM NAGOURNEY and MEGAN THEE
Published: April 4, 2008
WASHINGTON — Senator Barack Obama’s support among Democrats nationally has softened over the last month, particularly among men and upper-income voters, as voters have taken a slightly less positive view of him than they did after his burst of victories in February, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.
The survey suggests that Mr. Obama, Democrat of Illinois, may have been at something of a peak in February, propelled by a string of primary and caucus victories over Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, and that perceptions of him are settling down.
Mr. Obama’s favorability rating among Democratic primary voters has dropped seven percentage points, to 62 percent, since the last Times/CBS News survey, in late February. While that figure is by any measure high, the decline came in a month during which he endured withering attacks from Mrs. Clinton and responded to reports that his former pastor had made politically inflammatory statements from his church’s pulpit in Chicago....
Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama are now effectively tied among Democratic voters, with 46 percent saying they want the party to nominate Mr. Obama, compared with 43 percent for Mrs. Clinton. In late February, 54 percent of Democrats said they wanted Mr. Obama to win the nomination, compared with 38 percent for Mrs. Clinton.

re: NYT: Obama's Support Softens#3
Posted: 4/4/08 at 4:53pmThe NY Times has a vested interest in Hillary Clinton defeating Obama because they endorsed her. And the last thing they want is to be on the losing side. It's the Times--they like to think they're above reproach.

It was a New York Times/CBS News poll.
What's CBS News's "vested interest"?

Right?

What's CBS News's "vested interest"?
The entire media industry has a vested interest in this horse-race. People watch tv when it's exciting. Clearly Hillary CAN'T win, but the media plays along like it's really close.

So you REALLY think the NY Times and CBS trumped up this poll to make it look like Obama's support is softening?
The NY Times and CBS News actually released a false poll--that's what you guys think?
Really?
Cool.
nyt/cbs poll finds bammy limp#13
Posted: 4/4/08 at 5:15pmI agree. There's no way Obama's support can falter. He's a uniter, and only making us stronger each day. Boycott CBS (except on Thursdays when Survivor is on)!

"So Obama can win? He really CAN do anything!"
I am talking about the Democratic nomination. The general election is different.
"The NY Times and CBS News actually realeased a false poll--that's what you guys think?"
Uh how many times do we have to go through this. Both sources have histories under this administration of fixing facts.
This study might well be true, but look at the amazing month Obama has had in Pennsylvania PJ. LOOK AT IT. Look what he went through, the pastor stuff, PA is a very racist state (I would know). It's this late in the primary and he makes $40 million dollars in one month. I guess it is down from his $55 a month before but come now he's doing pretty damn good.
Hillary on the other hand is the one suffering, she has lost ground in Pennsylvania and is in debt. She is the one losing. I don't know how any of these candidates can keep peak interest from a public that only likes 15 minute politics.

So what DO you all think of the fact that Obama is going to leave 60,000 troops in Iraq?

I just want to be clear on this.
60,000 troops left in Iraq is okay with all of you?
As long as Obama is the one to leave them there?

From the article:
This is not the first time the opinion of an adviser to the Obama campaign has differed with the candidate’s stated Iraq policy. In February, Mr. Obama’s first foreign policy tutor, Samantha Power, told BBC that the senator’s current Iraq plan would likely change based on the advice of military commanders in 2009. She has since resigned her position as a formal adviser.

PJ - Why don't you say Hillary and Barack? They both have the same position here. They have both said the same things.
Barack has to deal with this mess whether or not he voted for it. He is choosing to deal with the same way Hillary is and the way most democratic leadership wants him too.

Jesus, pj....
I never even intimated that the POLL was invalid--the point is that any coverage that bolsters Clinton or shows her in a favorable light is attractive to the editors of the NYTimes who do not want to back a loser who also represents them in Congress.
You may not think that the NYTimes DOES anything consciously to favor Clinton, but how can you deny that they would want her to win? Of course they would--the "paper of record" ALWAYS wants to be on the winning side--Obama defeating Clinton makes them look bad, regardless of how any of us feel.
Yes, Obama has fans in Rich and Dowd, but not in Krugman or Collins--but at the end of the day, they endorsed Clinton. Would YOU want the person you've endorsed to lose? Especially if you have the reputation of NYTimes?
If Hillary loses, the Times looks foolish and to them, that's anathema.

Because Barack has been campaigning on an ANTI-WAR platform that is a LIE.
He's no more anti-war than John McCain.
He's been criticizing Hillary's plan and his supporters have been damning her for the VOTE HE NEVER HAD TO TAKE, and her position is WAAAAAAAAAAAY more anti-war than the positions his advisers are crafting for him.
Y'all are drinking that Kool-Aid and believing his sweet talk and setting yourselves up for a disillusionment the likes of which the Left hasn't felt in DECADES.
Beware the lies of smooth-talking men.

PJ - You are acting irrational here. You are reacting like Hillary.
"Because Barack has been campaigning on an ANTI-WAR platform that is a LIE."
He most certainly HAS NOT. He has already suggested he would strike Pakistan and stay in Iraq as has Clinton. These are NOT anti-War stances.
"He's no more anti-war than John McCain. "
And neither is Clinton.
Why are you being so narrow-minded here? Does the defeat of Hillary Clinton hurt you that much you would use dumb objectivity?
