I'm a junior in high school and very interested in NYU's vocal performance/music theatre program. I'm aware that its a very hard school to get into but I was wondering how much your auditon really counts. My fresham/soph grades were not so good due to alot of reasons, I am now at a new school and have been making honor roll every term. Will my low grades as an underclassmen really affect my chances of getting in? I am confident I will do well with my audition and just wanted to know how much acadmics really matter for this specific program.
Sorry that this is so long! I would really appreciate any feedback :)
I'm in the exact same boat! I'd love to know as well!

Steinhardt, like Tisch, requires good academics as well as talent. For Steinhardt, there's an academic review before they invite you to audition. Tisch allows everyone to audition and does the academic review after. Both equally weight academics and artistic review. So basically, you need good grades to have a good chance.
It really depends on how low you are talking about. They look at how hard your classes are, what grade you achieved in them, and your overall GPA, if you have below a 3.0 it is going to seriously affect you, however if your essay, SATs and extra curriculars are outstanding, it might help. If not, you will not have a very good chance I am sorry to say. Audition will not carry you over the top, it needs to be the whole package, and don't give excuses about your grades during your interview or on your app whatever you do! Good luck though, everyone has a chance and there is no harm in applying so don't get discouraged, but be realistic at the same time, if you got all D's or F's your first two years, there is really very little chance you will be accepted, even though your later years are more important, those first two really do still count! If you don't make it take some course at a local college and get your grades up and try again for next year! Don't get discouraged and good luck!
Also, its not possible to audition for Tisch AND Steinhardt right?

Right. NYU only allows you to apply for one of its colleges.
