re: Name Day!!

I believe you have to be named after a saint for you to have a name day. In Greece and Cyprus, a person's name day is supposed to be more of a big deal than the person's birthday. At least that's what I was told by my Greek and Cypriot friends. Or maybe they were just trying to get more presents out of me. ;p

re: Name Day!!

Woo! Happy October sixth to me. I'll have to travel to Sweden to celebrate my name day. I have a common name so no difficulties here.

My user name has more name days than me. I'm jealous. Lea has January 5, April 29 (the day before my birthday), and June 26.

re: Name Day!!

The Italian custom is to name babies in honor of the saint whose feast day the child was born on. My name day is March 19th and it is a mega-celebration in this house. Recently I've stopped going to work on that day so I can attend mass and cook up a feast for my family and neighbors.

I also put an altar to honor my patron saint in my front window and proudly fly the Italian flag that day.
