Posted: 10/18/06 at 2:19pmI loved it! Love, love, loved it! I was the scrawny kid that always got picked on, and yet, I was fantastic at dodgeball, so I always felt somewhat vindicated when we'd play that. Especially when I'd catch it and get to hurl it back at one of my tormentors. Hard. During gym class, by the way. Officially sanctioned dodegball. lol

Posted: 10/18/06 at 2:20pmWe didn't have Nerf balls.

Posted: 10/18/06 at 2:20pmI'm a child of the 1980s, when everything was padded and safeguarded for us wee ones. Nerf dodgeball is pretty fun.

Posted: 10/18/06 at 2:22pmDodgeball is way fun! There's an informal dodgeball league in the summers here.

Calvin! Soulmate!
And for the record, these were not Nerf balls. They were red, rubber, and stung when they hit you. :-P

Posted: 10/18/06 at 2:26pmOddly enough, I was pretty good at a lot of sports. I was on my middle school soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, and softball teams. But I gave them all up in high school, 'cause they conflicted with drama. And I haven't played an organized sport since. =)

Posted: 10/18/06 at 2:26pmerika, those balls were great. They hurt! They left a big old red spot when they hit your leg. They bounced way the hell up! Good times.

Posted: 10/18/06 at 2:27pmI hated a miserable game called Steal the Bacon...it was nowhere near as fun as it sounds.

Posted: 10/18/06 at 2:29pmDoodle, did you play it with an eraser?
re: Nanny State Bans Tag#40

i would just wait a few minutes into a game of dodgeball and just sit down - pretending i had been hit. no one ever noticed. i did this because 1. i hated the game and 2. once i was the last person standing and hated the attention.
some might say i don't have the competitive edge, i say that i'm just not stupid enough to willingly stand there while someone chucks a ball at my head.

No, JG, it was a game we played in Boy Scouts (no sn*ing!) and we used...neckerchiefs.
One boy would sit with his legs crossed and raised, with the neckerchief under him, by his crotch. Turns were taken to try to steal it...very aggressive game. Now I dont understand why they made us play that game, yet banned gay scouts!
funny thing, I've been playing the home version ever since

Posted: 10/18/06 at 2:41pmOhhh. Our version of Steal The Bacon had an eraser in the middle and two lines of players on either side. One person from each group would have the turn. They would go up and get close to the eraser watching each other. One person would try to grab it and get back to their line before the other person coculd tag them. If they got back, their side got a point. If they got tagged, no points. Then it was another two's turn.

Did you have to wrestle for it?
That was steal the bacon.
I think it was to make us into men...it made me fall in love with half the troop.

In scouts, we used to play "Lights Out."
We'd be in two teams, each lined up on opposite walls. The leader would turn off the lights, throw a ball in the middle of the room and everyone would have to crab-walk to grab the ball and get it to the opposite wall. And you could do anything necessary to stop someone else who had the ball -- but if the lights were turned back on, you had to freeze.
That had a pretty high injury rate, too.

Posted: 10/18/06 at 2:47pmwe played "lights out" in cub scouts, too, but the rules were WAY different...

RobbO, I did this too. I did it because we used those red, textured balls and when you were hit with one it was painful. I hated dodgeball but I never wanted the game stopped because of me. I just quietly sat down and let the game continue.
