Chayefsky's screenplay is on the shortlist of the most brilliant -- and amazingly precient -- ever written. At a time when tv news merely consisted of only the three major networks, all very serious and substantive and conservative with few graphics and no teasers, he predicted a time when the news would be marketed like any other entertainment television with lots of flash and color and sleezy sensationalistic tabloid stories would make up most of the broadcast. He also predicted reality television which was absolutely unthinkable 30 years ago (Chayefsky was criticized at the time for being too cynical and unrealistic). What was in the 70s mere satire, has become our present day media reality, making "Network" all the more chilling and compelling to watch today. On top of that, the performances -- Dunaway, Holden, Finch, Strait, Duvall, Beatty, etc... -- are all maginificent.
One of my favorite films.

It's one of my favorite films of all time, and deserved the BP Oscar in '76. And with Taxi Driver, All the President's Men, and Rocky in the lineup, that ain't bad.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
The entire cast is great, but Faye Dunaway is just stunning, and her Oscar was well-deserved. It has to be her best performance. While some have called her work in this over-the-top, the plot wouldn't have been as believable without her. Same thing for Meryl Streep in The Manchurian Candidate.

I had to watch this film for English class last year--odd, yes--and I was expecting to hate it. But I really enjoyed it. I think it's an idea that can be looked at as relevant now as well as back in the '70s, and I think it's a classic film that has been widely overlooked recently.
Unfortunately, though, I ended up watching it with my mother. That was pretty uncomfortable, to say the least.

A companion piece is Paddy's "The Hospital" . It is a wickedly incisive parody of hospitals & medicine. Surprising a lot of it is still valid today
Network is indeed a brilliant piece of moviemaking with tremendous performances from all concerned

Posted: 8/20/06 at 7:10pm"Network" was and is brilliant. I just bought the 2 disc DVD Special Edition for about $10 on deep discount DVD. I had it on VHS but this looks much better on my 53" High Def screen.

Amazing how it's as relevant today as the day it was released; maybe even more so. Hard to believe it's 30 years old.

Mr Roxy-
The Hospital is awesome, and I think George C. Scott deserved the Oscar for it.
