New MacBook Pro's

Posted: 11/17/08 at 5:05pmI have the old MacBook Pro but I recently had a chance to set up and transfer files for both my brother and a friend who just upgraded from Powerbook G4s to the new MacBook Pro. I have to say that I was quite envious of their new computers. They are awesome machines.

That's the feature I was particularly wondering/worried about.
How is it with no button? I know that the whole trackpad now is a button, but can you still just tap the trackpad to click without actually pushing down on it in like a button?
Also, how glossy are the screens? I've read that they can be a real nuisance if you work near a window or in well-lit areas.

Posted: 11/18/08 at 2:18amI've read the reviews on Amazon and some of the people have said that the screens are not good at all. Black appears to the blue and they are not as good as the old MacBooks were.

Posted: 11/18/08 at 7:43amI totally disagree. Having worked on both the new MacBooks and the new MacBook Pros (they are two different computers by the way) the screens are fine and I also really like the new trackpad. Some of the amazon reviews are from people who don't even own the new computers. As a mater of fact some of the reviews were posted before the computers were actually on sale.

i guess my thing is, i want to buy a mac laptop and move away from my iMac finally, but i dont know if i should buy a NEW Macbook Pro or an older Macbook pro (and save alot of money since they're going for like $1499 now).
I dont know if the new ones offer significant upgrades as far as hardware goes that is worth the extra few hundred bucks.
The glossy screen doesnt bother me. I've used it in the store and my old laptop years ago before I moved to Mac was glossy and it never bothered me. as a photographer it probably makes my photos look better.
But, we're talking about a $500 price difference in the old and new model. and i want to know if its worth it. is the speed noticeably faster? the features that much better... etc :)

If you are on a budget, I would suggest you save the $500 and buy the old MacBook Pro. The speed difference is only noticeable if you are into video editing or gaming and that is mostly because of the new video processors. It really depends on how you use your computer. If you mostly use it for the internet, email and Word then the old MacBook Pro will be fine. If you spend most of you computing time playing games, editing video, etc. you WILL see a difference having the new model.
As for the track pad:

well i dont really play video games but i edit alot of home movies on final cut express. and they are HD movies. right now I have an iMac with 2GB Ram (i have no idea about the video card, i bought the mac like 2 years ago) and it seems to work fine with my editing. i dont usually get stuck or anything.
i just dont want to buy the old macbook and suddenly find myself limited. i want it to atleast be as good as my imac.
and i dont wanna buy the new one and spend all that money and suddenly realize there's virtually no difference that i, as regular consumer, can even notice. you know?

I just bought a used I BOOK G3. I had an acer aspire one but the screen cracked after two short months. I just closed it and it cracked.
Does anyone have an ibook g3 and is it obsolete? I paid $280 as a second computer as my Dell laptop weighs 8 pounds and is too heavy to even carry from my bed to my couch, never mind anywhere else.
My Dell could give you a hernia.

Thanks for the link, pab.
However, that article doesn't address whether you can tap the trackpad to click as opposed to pushing it down like a button.
Do you happen to know anything about that?
