What do people recommend?

Looking for August 10th tilll the 15th.

I was thinking under $170.00 per night.

Was wondering what some of the mystery hotels might be like?

TripAdvisor is a great resource for hotel reviews. I basically just inputed your dates. Unfortunately I couldn't indicate $170 as your max, but it shows hotels $200 and less. Hopefully this will give you a good start..

Go to Priceline. I got The Westin Times Square for $110 a night last August. Just choose to name your own price and choose Times Square and put in $130 as your price for a 4* Deluxe. I checked and if you go lower than $130 it says you have only a small chance of being accepted. You may have to up it to around $155. No, you don't choose your hotel, but you get a 4* and save a boatload. I don't know anyone who has ever gotten a bad deal. On this site: http://www.betterbidding.com/ you can see what people have gotten recently with priceline. Looks like someone got The Westin for the week after your trip for $159. You can get better prices if you choose Midtown.

Jersey Girl- that sounds like a great deal! I'll have to remember that the next time. I booked a room for late August at the Chelsea Savoy- in Midtown for about $125/night through Hotels.com.

From kayak.com, travel dates 8/10 - 8/15:

The Pod, $123/night on skoosh.com (I have used skoosh, very reliable.)

The Edison, $140, easyclicktravel.com

The Bedford Hotel $148, easyclicktravel.com

The Herald Square Hotel, $159, booking.com

The Flatotel $159, booking.com

Comfort Inn, Chelsea, $165, comfortinn.com

The Marcel at Gramercy, $167, skoosh.com

Hotel Stanford, $169, hotels.com

Can't vouch for the quality of any of the above, read reviews on tripadvisor.com.

Agree that priceline may be the way to go to get more bang for your buck. But if you have never used priceline before go to betterbidding.com, read the New York priceline forum, and post for help. Priceline is tricky.

Has anyone ever stayed at the Portland Square Hotel? I am looking for just one night, so it doesn't have to be something fancy? I found this for cheap (around $112) and have read good and bad things about it, so just looking for more opinions. Thanks!

millie,

I haven't stayed there, but recent reviews from those who have complained that it is dirty and very loud because of renovations going on.

I stayed at the Hampton Inn Manhattan/Times Square South last October and found it to be a pleasant experience. Yes, the room was small but most New York hotel rooms are. But it was clean and not overly far from the theatre district but not completely on top of the hubbub of Times Square. The wi-fi is free which I've found to be a rarity in NYC. For the days the OP posted it is $211.65/night. A bit higher than $170 but not bad for NYC.

The Hotel Carter is a steal.

I have stayed at the Pod and highly recommend it!

There's also the YMCA option which *can* be LESS THAN $100/night. Google 'YMCA West Side' and see what a room there goes for nowadays. Very basic with community bath, private bath is additional.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Was looking at the pod. But might end up blowing the budget and go for the Hilton Club on west (?) street. They have a really good deal on at the moment. That comes in at just under 210.00 (au) per night with full breakfast.

Plus I could get a high floor...the view might win out.
