My dream is to one day be able to work and live in New York. It's very expensive for me to visit to New York so I sometimes daydream about being there. Something I often do is to watch movies that takes place in or captures the spirit of New York, to able to re-live the memories I have of this fantastic city.

So now I'm asking you guys if you have any favorite New York movies. It could be a movie, documentary or tv-series.

A few of my favorites are Taxidriver, Manhattan, Annie Hall, When Harry Met Sally, Rosemary's Baby, The Devil Wears Prada, Breakfast at Tiffany's, anything Sex and the City and Friends.

Also, I want to apologize if there's any grammar or spelling mistakes. English is not my first language.

Even though it's already been mentioned, Woody Allen movies really capture the spirit and experience of NYC.

On the flip side, to me, Spike Lee movies do not...even though they are mostly set in NYC.

All good recommendations.

Of course there are scores of films set in NY, but the suggestions below are films that couldn't have taken place anywhere else. The city is almost another character in some of these.
They're not all great movies, but they all have a distinct flavor and capture the milieu of the city at a certain place in time.

New York, New York
Sweet Smell Of Success
Breakfast At Tiffany's
The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3(original 1974)
The Goodbye Girl
Fame (1980 original)
Prince Of The City
Trading Places
The Cotton Club
Once Upon A Time In America
Wall Street
Bright Lights, Big City
Torch Song Trilogy
King Of New York
The Fisher King
Party Girl
The Last Days Of Disco
Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist
New York, I Love You

Enjoy!

For sure, there are a few clunkers on this list. And for sure there are a few that I would watch again and again (some because they are just so good, and some because they are true guilty pleasures). Enjoy, and I hope that some day you get to fulfill your dream of living here. We'll be waiting!

"After Hours" is the BEST....totally captures Bohemia. Teri Garr and Catherine O'Hara are perfection.

"Gee Whiz?! What are you doing? Trying to patronize me?" hahaha
"Surrender Dorothy!" hahahaha

To add to the "80s quirky" list, I recommend "Slaves of New York" starring Bernadette Peters a slew of recognizable NY stage actors. I love that movie.

"The sexual energy between the mother and son really concerns me!"-random woman behind me at Next to Normal "I want to meet him after and bang him!"-random woman who exposed her breasts at Rock of Ages, referring to James Carpinello

DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN totally made me want to move to New York. And here I am...still wishing I could have a loft like Aidan Quinn's with the aquarium room divider and the Bruce Lee mural.

For more NY Bohemia: STRANGER THAN PARADISE, TIMES SQUARE, SMITHEREENS.
