New York songs

one of my good friends found out she just got accepted at NYU for the fall, so she's moving away New York songs

i thought i would make her the 21st century version of a mix tape, a mix CD that she can download to her iPod and think of me everytime it plays.

the theme is songs about new york (musical theatre is best, but others are swell too). suggestions greatly appreciated.

so far i've got:
- "new york, new york" (kander and ebb)
- "new york, new york" (on the town - bernstein)
- "only in new york" (millie)
- "42nd street" (42nd street)
- "new york state of mind" (billy joel)
- "broadway baby" (sondheim)
- "west end avenue" (schwartz)
- "christopher street" (bernstein)
- "conquering new york" (bernstein) - instr.
- "take me back to manhattan" (cole porter)
- "slaughter on 10th ave" (hart) - instr.
- "give my regards to bway" (cohan)
- "45 minutes from bway" (cohan)
- "another hundred people" (sondheim)
- "best that you can do" (peter allen)
Don't f*ck with me fellas. This ain't my first time at the rodeo.

re: New York songs

Hmmm...I can't think of any other musical New York songs off-hand, but as for pop/rock stuff:

-Miami 2017 (Billy Joel)
-Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters (Elton John...though you could get Sherie Rene Scott's version)
-Angel of Harlem (U2)
-I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City (Harry Nilsson)
-New York, New York (Ryan Adams)
-Chelsea (Counting Crows)
-Leaving New York (REM)
-City of Blinding Lights (U2)
-New York (Richard Ashcroft)
-The Only Living Boy in New York (Simon and Garfunkel)

Hmmm...think that's about it for the moment.

But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

re: New York songs

CJR, you beat me to it - On Broadway. But I have the lyrics:

They say the neon lights are bright
On Broadway, on Broadway.
They say there's always magic in the air.
But when you're walking down that street,
And you ain't had enough to eat.
The glitter's all washed off,
And you're nowhere.

They say the girls are something else
On Broadway, on broadway.
But looking at them just gives me the blues.
'Cause how you gonna make some time,
When all you got is one thin dime?
And one thin dime won't even shine your shoes.

They say that I won't last too long
On Broadway, on Broadway.
I'll catch a Greyhound bus, they all say.
Oh, they're dead wrong! I know they are,
'cause I can play this here guitar.
And I won't quit 'till I'm a star
On Broadway, on Broadway.
Salmon leap from the womb of the white sea you look on; they are calves, they are lambs of good color, in peace without slaughter.
