Not Getting any College Auditions? / How to be confident in Acting Despite Trauma? (TW: eating disorder and sexual assault)

Hi all,I'm a sophomore Theatre BA focusing in acting (I know that's not the ideal acting training but my parents made me double major in English :/). I've been auditioning for a lot of straight theatre lately but haven't been even getting callbacks. I used to get cast frequently in musicals in HS/Freshmen year of college. I am a strong singer, but I've always been more passionate about acting.

I took my first Acting Class last semester and my professor is now an unofficial mentor. She says she's seen me take my acting to great places in class so she thinks it's just a comfort/confidence thing and that I'm not taking big enough risks in auditions.

Honestly I think she's right. As a child/teenager (ages 8-18 ) was always comfortable in auditions and really went for it. Unfortunately I went through some personal trauma at age 18 (TW: sexual assault and ED) that basically made me feel worthless (I'm 20 now) so now I can't get as comfortable around strangers and I'm trying to work through it but it's just really hard.

Do you guys buy this or do you think I'm probably just a bad actress? I mean I know my confidence needs work but constant rejection doesn't really help with that (the catch-22 of acting :P). How can I get my confidence back?

Also: I am taking two more acting classes next semester. This semester I chose go get some English classes and non-acting Theatre classes out of the way. :P

Thanks lovelies,

Goob

i'm more than certain you're a perfectly wonderful actress! Everyone goes through bad times, and rebuilding is ultimately a process. I, personally, haven't been in any play for almost four years and i just recently put my foot out and tried out for my first ever musical and it went really bad. But I just took it as a learning experience and that's really all you can do. Do some reflecting on your most recent auditions and make a list of things you feel like you did well, and things that you feel like you can improve and maybe take it to your mentor and see if she can give you any pointers!

There is no way for us to know if you are a good actress or not from this post. If it's what you love to do, then keep trying. Only you can decide if/when you've had enough of trying. If you feel you can do "one more" audition. DO it.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
