re: not so 'dolce' musto

Perhaps memebers of this board should run for office, then. :) I've always said, I'm not going to my HS class reunion unless I have an escort from the secret service.

re: not so 'dolce' musto

mrs. mambo asked me once, "why don't you run for office? you really are into politics and i think you'd be a good politician." after i managed to stop my guffaws and wipe away the tears of laughter, i pointed out a few recent developments during the primaries (i.e. the gw guard records) and asked her to consider what people might think of some of my less than glowing moments. then it was her turn to laugh as she imagined peter jennings trying to find a way to describe some of my antics without offending the american people. for the record, she laughed a lot longer than i did. and everytime she looked at me the rest of the night started laughing all over again. i'm still dealing with the trauma of that night. thanks for sending me down this path, ck and flit...you heartless f***s!

Eek. Never said anything about a 'purity' test.
I often come up looking very bad on those.

re: not so 'dolce' musto

it's the "driving" of the snow that tends to be the problem.

re: not so 'dolce' musto

I hold the Purity Test partly accountable for why we have such limited choices when it comes to voting. Anyone with a colorful history of any kind is afraid to run any more. And we end up with all these straight-laced stiffs who have been keeping their noses clean since they decided at age 12 that they had a future in politics. It totally eliminates the late bloomers...unless they have parents with enough money or political influence to make it go away.

Just a guess, but I'm bettin' none of us fall into that catagory.

Speaking of colorful histories, here's a relatively short history of St. Ronnie's that might jar the memories of some of us who survived those times, and enlighten some of you who weren't born yet.

I feel reasonably certain that Carter would have acted very differently. He was never an "us v. them" man. As in, "that diseases is affecting them, not us." Carter always seemed to grasp that we are all humans and should strive to care for each other.

re: not so 'dolce' musto

I think it's reasonable to say that about Crater. From what I've read and heard he was a very different person than Reagan. Carter never lost touch with the common person and was an advocate of human rights. He was not a bad president considering his trem was during a time of high unemployment and a large budget deficit.

The Reagan's were too far removed from the average American.

What I would love to know is what Reagan did during his presidency that was positive. I keep heraing, in all these tributes, what a nice gut he was, what a great sense of humor he had but, nothing other than the end of the cold war, is mentioned specifically. That was an accomplishment but, part of the credit for that also goes to Gorbachev. the two were able to connect, trust one another and make positive changes.

Everyone who defends Reagan through all the negative comments says that you have to remember the positive things he did. What were they?

OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD.

I had to stop reading at "In Central America, totalitarian allies of Fidel Castro had conquered Nicaragua. Abandoning their promises to protect civil liberty, the Sandinistas were creating a Stalinist state in which the Communist party would be the living God in the 'liberation theology'" of a servile state church. Other Communists were fighting a war for the same goal in Central America."

Or to put it another way, "we don't like the way your free elections turned out so we will illegally fund (by lying to Congress) terrorists until there is a government installed that WE like." Sigh.
