re: Not a Day Goes By

Hasn't someone already set THE CHERRY ORCHARD in the Deep South? Like Lillian Hellman?

re: Not a Day Goes By

Ok... *clears throat*

Mary_Ethel, I like you too!

(is this another phyllis george thing I just don't get?)

Don't worry Thenardier, I won't take her away from you. I like boys (though she might be the exception to that rule)

You caught me, wildcat! **blushes**

THE WISTERIA TREES, freely adapted from THE CHERRY ORCHARD by Joshua Logan, opened in 1949 and had a brief run.

And YES, it DID take place on a decaying plantation in Louisiana.

"Glebb"'s screen name is Russian, of course...

I've had Glebb as my screenname for at least ten years.

Gleb was one of the first Russian (martyr) Saints.
Gleb Botkin was the son of the physician of Tsar Nicholas II and he was a friend of Grand Duchess Anastasia.

re: Not a Day Goes By

To jack the thread back to its original topic... would that be reverse threadjacking? Anyway... I love Betty Buckley's version of this song. Just seems so... real.

re: Not a Day Goes By

At the recent Sondheim birthday tribute the song was nailed by Marin Mazzie, who gets more and more magnificent as she gets older.

Someday she will be a gorgeous Desiree.

Gee, look at all the great threads I miss by sleeping in the wee hours of the morning.

M_E: I love the music from "Merrily" (adore anything Sondheim), but how did you think the story worked? I know it's been worked and re-worked over the years. How is the latest incarnation?

And before you go professing your love for Thenardier, that bulge in his pocket DOESN'T mean he's glad to see you - it's a syringe! (see Average Age thread for confirmation)

You have to hand it to Mary_Ethel - impeccable taste in music!

re: Not a Day Goes By

I believe Lilian Hellman wrote an adaptation of THE CHERRY ORCHARD set in the post-Civil War South, called THE WISTERIA TREES.

I think UNCLE VANYA would make a good Sondheim musical.

By the way, Carly Simon does a great rendition of NOT A DAY GOES BY on her "TORCH" album.

TheGaIsSilent,

That concert wouldn't be with the Broadway At the Y chorus would it?

re: Not a Day Goes By

Just saw Patti Lupone perform it on Wednesday night. Beautiful!

I heard Bernadette Peters' version first, and I still adore it.

re: Not a Day Goes By

I just love it. I'm especially fond of the OBCR, but anytime, anywhere is where I like to hear it.
I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

re: Not a Day Goes By

Chekhov's "the Boor" aka "The Bear" was musicalized in A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD/A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE as "A Night in the Ukraine"
