My opinion, they put in the nudity for attention - to get people to come and see the show.
Excellent. I'm seeing TAKE ME OUT this week -- I was hoping the nudity would be gratuitous and uncalled for.

Posted: 1/16/05 at 12:37pmkj, I heard the whole cast got naked. There was one minor in the show, so, if anyone did not participate, it would have been him.

There's going to be a Chicago staging for much of this spring. Unfortunately, the cast probably won't be as easy on the eye as the OBC. I only like the show for the nudity at this point. Whether it's gratuitous is obviously debatable. I only wish that more playwrights and producers would catch onto this so that we could all legitimately watch what amounts to live pornography.

Justice, does a play need to only be about one thing? Perhaps the fact that you have to grapple to figure out the theme(s) is an excellent trait in a play. Perhaps the multiple meanings of the title enhances the complexities. Perhaps an audience thinking of a work long after seeing is what many writers aspire to.
And the actions and reactions of naked people sharing a communal shower is more revealing of their characters than any dialogue. I found it hardly gratuitous.

Posted: 1/16/05 at 2:41pmThe nudity in Take Me Out was thought provoking, just don't ask for specifics...

Posted: 1/16/05 at 2:50pmThe only thing the nudity was to that show was a challenge for the actors onstage who had to do it. I'm not saying I found it offensive - I just thought that the story could have done without it. And, I know shows aren't supposed to be about one thing, but this show was inconsistent, and never concluded anything, except that homo's can fall in love with baseball as much as the straight man can. Obviously, this is my own opinion, but, i personally did not like the show. And, personally, I found the nudity to be gratouitous and unessecary. I could have gotten the same point without it. It's not like Mary-Louise Parker's moving scene in Angels in America, or any of the other nude scenes in that movie. Those were meaningful. Taking a shower with banter is not meaningful in any way.

Posted: 1/16/05 at 3:18pmJohn Lithgow and Bill Macy (Maude) did okay. "Oh, Calcutta!" actually had lots of dancing in it. It's a horrible show, though, and I suppose being naked and dancing isn't much of a resume. Besides, what does it prepare you for.

Posted: 1/16/05 at 4:19pmThe entire original cast of HAIR did NOT get naked -- only those members who volunteered to do so did it (which was most of the cast, mind you, but not all). Keaton was one of those who refused and never disrobed on stage during her run in the show.

The nudity in TMO was perfect because THAT is the big deal with gays in sports (and gays in the military). The "OMG! A faggot is gonna see me naked in the shower and lust after me".
The play dealt with this crucial issue blatantly and perfectly.

Posted: 1/16/05 at 7:33pmThere's shows with nudity and there's nude shows- Hair and Take Me Out are in the former category, and shouldn't be counted with stuff like Oh, Calcutta!.
