Is this a NYSSMA song? If so, what level? Thanks in advance. I'm wondering because I'm starting to learn it (by picking it out on the piano) and it's hard. I'm looking for a song for level 6 so it would be great if this were a level 6 song.

I believe it is a 6, unless they changed it from 2 yrs ago.

Boy - are you on the wrong board!
It is a difficult peice and it must be sung with very accurate and very robust diction ! It also must be sung with a state of mild hysteria and any singer worth his/her salt would throw in trills during the peice and a cadenza at the end - also - make sure that the accompianist drops out at the final - "alfin - se" and then comes in on the "mia"...very touching!
Not an easy song ! find Tebaldi's recording!

I knew it was really hard! Good thing I'm starting with it now. And in a few weeks, I start Italian (my high school language) and I'll get an Italian-English dictionary. I was wondering because I got a 93 on level 5 this year and I wanted to get higher. For level 6, my goal is at least a 95, but I'm aiming for a 99. I know, high standards, but I want to do well. I want to make All-State next year (too young this year).

This is my favorite aria to perform. For some reason, it just sits well in my voice. I've done it I don't know how many times now.
Good luck, MFL! It's a very beautiful piece, and I'm sure you'll do very well at NYSSMA!

I sang this in first year university. It is NOT a light piece. Be careful- you have a great voice but the judges may wonder about age approprieatness.

if you sing on the words - understand what they mean - the rest will follow - you MUST understand the italian! You must understand the torment - even if it may be a bit more juvenille than TOSCA , let's say... Again, Tebaldi!
Phrase it and the rest will be fine!
Bocco al lupo!
Thanks! Oy, I can't believe I'm worrying about NYSSMA already...I really am neurotic! And voiceanth, don't worry about me understanding the Italian...last tiem I did an Italian song, my voice teacher translated it for me. She's Italian, which helps a lot. And Judy_in_disguise, thanks for the tip. I'll remember that.

Not just tanslating - it's PHRASING the words - listen to a Domingo a Gigli a Tebaldi they phrase it with a beauy that is profound! No other language is as beautiful..
If you can get through this aria - you can start looking at the easy early Bellini songs and those teach you everything you need to know about singing!!
Now, go get em' tiger!
