ok, umm yeah. this qualifies as an emergency for me.
i plugged my ipod into the computer to charge it, and something came up that said "itunes can not read ipod GRANNYSMITH (it's a bright green device made by apple, what else was i supossed to name it?) click to restore factory settings"
from what i understand, restoring factory settings means everything on the ipod gets deleted.
does that mean everything on itunes gets deleted as well?
what do it do??? *sobs in the corner*

Nope your iTunes won't be erased, just your iPod. After you hit, restore unplug it, close itunes, open iTunes back up, plug iPod back in, wait until iTunes recognizes the device and hit Sync. It'll take forever for all your songs to get back on there but it should be fine.

I don't know if this is just the newer models, but when I had to restore my iTouch, it asked me if I wanted to restore using the most recent backed up version. So I didn't even lose the data in my applications (high scores and stuff like that).
If that happened to me I'd be fu*ked. I don't have enough space on my computer to keep all of my songs and videos saved on my computer and able to sync up with my ipod.
mine's a new-ish model... it's the ipod nano, the one that came out right before the one that takes videos came out, not sure what generation it is... it's the long skinny one with the big screen.
it's actually a good time for it to start malfunctioning.... i've had it for 10 months. if it decides to go dead on me, it's still under warenty!
CATS, that's why you get an external hard drive!
I got this error before when I plugged in a flash drive that stole the drive letter previously used by my iPod. When I plugged in my iPod and started iTunes, I got the error. I went into Disk Management and changed the drive letter on my iPod to what it used to be, after changing the drive letter on my flash drive to an unused letter (Z or something far up). Then voila, iTunes had no problem reading my iPod.
I've had my iPod mini for over four years now and I've never needed to factory-restore it.
Are you having the same problem?
