How is this surprising? He's not for gay marriage, and I don't think he ever said or implied he was - he's one of those "compromise on civil unions" types, though I hold out hope that his mind can be changed eventually if he sees separate isn't equal. (The NJ debacle can be good for something in the long term.) For now, I'm hoping he can pick it up in areas like DADA/DOMA, at least.

He can never change, unless he figures out some way to take God back OUT of the equation.
If he changes now, he'll be seen as compromising his "religious" beliefs--or having said them merely for political expediency.
