I guess this shows how devoted he as to his religious beliefs.

He didn't quit his religious beliefs, he quit his church. Not THE church. That ONE church.

Sheesh. Drama!

I'm curious how we're supposed to react to this. He was a member there for 20 YEARS. How are we not supposed to see this as anything but political necessity? Are we really supposed to believe that nothing like what we've heard recently was ever said there before? That it is only now that these things exist, forcing him to quit?

I'm very put off by all of it - and I doubt I'm alone in that feeling.

Father Michael Pflager is a publicity whore. He's the white Al Sharpton. Well, now he's got his national exposure.

So much for winning over the Clinton supporters...

I don't think Reverend Bigmouth sang quite so loudly until the spotlight was turned on him. I'm sure he showed his colors before, no doubt, but once he had that national pulpit, he launched into his BIG number.

This was a natural course of events. I'm sure Obama isn't happy about it, but it really is the only decision he could make under the circumstances.

...and people change churches all the time.

DG, you are NOT alone. Well said. I think the problem would have gone away in a few days. This IMO looks way too political.

Quitting won't stop the conservative 527s from doing TV commercials about what was preached at the church over the 20 years he was a member.

Democrats will forgive him. Republicans will not. The election will hinge, as they always do, on the moderates.

He should have quit the church in March, or perhaps 19 years, 11 months ago.

"...and people change churches all the time."

Yes, they do - but he didn't. For 20 years. That tells me more about him than his desperate maneuver right now.

This is a real damned if you do , damned if you don't situation. If he stayed with the church he would be criticized for following the wonderful Reverend. Now that he has left the church , he is criticized because his actions seem political... People will find fault with no matter what he does from this point on.

Obama's quote from the CNN article:

"We also don't want the church subjected to the scrutiny that a presidential campaign legitimately undergoes."

Why not? I wish most churches were more scrutinized.

I'm put off by the disingenuous nature of it. It's absurd for anyone to suggest that these types of thoughts, feelings and attitudes haven't existed at that church all these years. Even allowing for some over-zealousness because of the limelight, the substance didn't just materialize overnight.

I would have a much easier time - and respect - if he stood by the statement that you don't always agree with everything your pastor says or does. This throwing the church away because of public outcry after the fact rings completely hollow to me - and is the antithesis of his 'politics of change' that he tries to portray.

Just admit it. There is nothing he could do to please you. He could sell all his posessions and live among the lepers or drop out of the race to attend Gypsy 8 times a week and STILL it would be the wrong thing.

Get ready for more, DG. He's just a politician, like all the others.

He's not superman, he's not the messiah, he isn't even a practitioner of a "new politics." He's just a politician who happens to give stirring speeches.

But he's better than McCain.

It's not about what you think. The Obama campaign knows what you think.

It's about what the necessary undecided voters think.

That's the game they're playing.

Oops--I mean, WE'RE playing!

The Republican 527s will continue to show videos, as the mainstream media begins to do the investigative work for some reason it held off doing during the primary season.

Here's Jake Tapper from ABC News "uncovering" Obama's long-term relationship with Father Pfleger:
Rev. Pfleger: "America is the Greatest Sin Against God"
