*sigh*
Dick Cheney is doing more for Gay people than Obama is. He Support's Gay Marriage! Hell is getting awfully chilly right about now.

Paging Barack Obama! Now would be a good time to address all the Gays and Lesbians who voted for you. I will even settle for ANYTHING at this point. For Christ Sake, Dick Cheney supports Gay marriage! Ugh!
I watched the clip of Cheney speaking, and it was the first time he ever came across as an actual human being.
WTF? I'm so confused. Have I awoken in an alternate reality?
Yes Taz...and by the way?
Ellen is straight.
Wait, is Ellen still a man though?

You don't really believe a word Dick Cheney says, do you?
Here's a link to a video of his comments:
Cheney on gay mariage
No Roscoe, but then again I don't believe a word Obama says either.

You know when it would have been a good to mention that, Dick? When you were VP.
"Dick and Lynne Cheney claim to be outraged that John Kerry mentioned their daughter Mary's sexual orientation (she's gay) in the Oct. 13 debate. Immediately after the debate, Lynne said it was a "cheap and tawdry political trick."...The morning after the debate, Jodi Wilgoren reported in the New York Times that three undecided Iowans?all members of the same family?had thought it "unfair" for Kerry to mention that Mary Cheney was gay. Knowing now that outrage had tested well in a focus group, Cheney chimed in early that afternoon that he was "a pretty angry father," and said it showed that Kerry will "say and do anything in order to get elected.""
And there's this gem, too: "Asked about laws to ban gay marriage, Cheney, who has a gay daughter, suggested that although he may not agree with the President's desire to pass such a law (the House of Representatives shot down the bill last week), he was loyal to Bush and would support whatever legislation the commander in chief offered."
Well I bet if Sasha or Nala or Melora or whatever their names are turn out to be dykes too then Obama will be for it.
Cheney is actually just repeating the standard response of civil-libertarian conservatives (as opposed to social conservatives), which is that the states should determine the issues like gay-marriage and abortion, not the federal government and not the courts.

And he's not advocating federal recognition of same-sex marriages performed in all those states, either.
He'll keep his own pathetic daughter a second class citizen.
Cheney's just another of these Republicans who are taking slightly more liberal positions now that they are no longer in a position to take real action on them. He'll endorse the repeal of DADT next, no doubt.
Cheney can say anything he wants now that he's no longer in office - he has absolutely nothing to lose.
That being said, I'm still not condoning Obama's SILENCE on the issue.
Good things come to those who wait Dottie.

"Good things come to those who wait Dottie."
This is the kind of thing one says to a third grader waiting for a cookie, not to a group of people who are demanding recognition of their basic human rights from an oppressive group of bigots.

Exactly. Good things come to those who wait, Roscoe.
I'm sure he's working on it and I'm sure it will be historic.
PalJoey, I hope you're right.
Well I bet if Sasha or Nala or Melora or whatever their names are turn out to be dykes too then Obama will be for it.
Sasha and Malia. Was that really difficult or were you trying to be rude?
Which way is up again?
"Cheney's just another of these Republicans who are taking slightly more liberal positions now that they are no longer in a position to take real action on them."
Roscoe, is that really a fair statement to make? I'm a Republican, and I've supported gay rights for years...not that I have any power of any kind!
Another silver lining is that people who support Cheney may be moved to re-examine their own positions on the subject, following his lead.
Regardless, I'll take it. Anyone who makes a public statement in support of equal rights is welcome, in my book.
(and, JG2 - thank you)

Magdalene, it is an entirely fair statement to make. There are apparently many Republicans (yourself among them) who have apparently always supported gay rights. I wasn't talking about them, whoever they are.
Dick Cheney claiming to support gay marriage now that he is out of office and not in a position to do anything about it is like Colin Powell claiming that he supports the repeal of DADT when he is safely not going to be able to do anything about it.
I think he will come 'round sooner than later, but it is time that someone quietly reminded him that he coined the phrase "...the urgency of now..." and any resistance to full support ultimately makes him very vulnerable to charges hypocrisy. Still, he is the first president to declare June GLBT pride month, yes? (I'm sure someone will correct me shortly if I'm wrong.)
