Yes, she's Newyorican.
Yes, she's from the Bronx.
And, yes, she graduated summa cum laude from Princeton.
And, yes, she was editor of the Law Review while at Yale.
So as we say in the Bronx, "What's it to ya?"

Posted: 5/26/09 at 11:15amSince she's a Bronx girl, rather than having the Senate confirm her, I think the decision should be left to Amy Peohler and Maya Rudolph. They should have her as a guest on Bronx Beat, then render their decision.

I'm incredibly biased but I'm so happy that Obama picked her.
A few years ago she gave me one of the best birthday presents of my life.

Huckabee makes his thoughts on Sotomayor clear, though he got her name wrong (his office promptly corrected their eror):
"The appointment of Maria Sotomayor for the Supreme Court is the clearest indication yet that President Obama's campaign promises to be a centrist and think in a bipartisan way were mere rhetoric. Sotomayor comes from the far left and will likely leave us with something akin to the "Extreme Court" that could mark a major shift."

I can't wait to watch the GOP collapse even further as they alienate hispanics by attempting to filibuster her nomination.
If they go much further, all that will be left in the GOP is white men that CURRENTLY own slaves.

"filibuster, taz. did the democrats get to 60 recently?"
I think that there's a better than 50/50 chance that Franken will be seated before Sotomayor's confirmation gets to the Senate floor.

And Mitt Romney weighs in:
"The nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court is troubling. Her public statements make it clear she has an expansive view of the role of the judiciary."

re OP - Good move. I'd rather see this than Obama pandering like a wimp to the Republicans. I hope she gets the confirmation.
for the gop to reorganize itself into a party that is more than a collection of religious zealots.
When was it much more than that? at least in recent history?

"i would hope that a wise latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
how is that not racist? honestly.
that said, i think the gop should expose her as an idiot and a racist and then vote present. all of them.

wow.
"whether born from experience or inherent physiological or cultural differences," she said, for jurists who are women and nonwhite, "our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging."
sonia, how exactly are latinos physiologically different from caucasians and how does that specifically affect the decision making process with regard to legal analysis and interpretation?
fun with sonia

Did you read her speech, or are you just subscribing to FoxNews' talking points? The link to her entire speech is below, and while I don't necessarily agree with every one of her points, it's clearly a speech to a Hispanic audience about how judges' life experiences impact their decision making. I found it an interesting read, and it would only make me look upon her more favorably.

my talking point came from the new york times as my link showed. she's a racist and incapable of the barest requirement of a jurist: impartiality. but no matter, put her on the court and let her make an idiot of herself for years to come and act as a legacy for barry.
she's replacing souter after all, so it's a wash.

"sonia, how exactly are latinos physiologically different from caucasians and how does that specifically affect the decision making process with regard to legal analysis and interpretation?"
Most Latinos' pigmentation is darker than most caucasians. Many people treat them differently than they treat caucasians. They bring different life experiences to the bench (or to any other job). Sotomayor says it better than I:
"While recognizing the potential effect of individual experiences on perception, Judge Cedarbaum nevertheless believes that judges must transcend their personal sympathies and prejudices and aspire to achieve a greater degree of fairness and integrity based on the reason of law. Although I agree with and attempt to work toward Judge Cedarbaum's aspiration, I wonder whether achieving that goal is possible in all or even in most cases. And I wonder whether by ignoring our differences as women or men of color we do a disservice both to the law and society."

Papa, I'll make it easier for you. Here are the official Stepford, I mean GOP, talking points:
Orrin Hatch (R-Utah): "I will focus on determining whether Judge Sotomayor is committed to deciding cases based only on the law as made by the people and their elected representatives, not on personal feelings or politics."
Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.): "We will thoroughly examine her record to ensure she understands that the role of a jurist in our democracy is to apply the law even-handedly, despite their own feelings or personal or political preferences."
Charles Grassley (R-Iowa): "The Judiciary Committee should take time to ensure that the nominee will be true to the Constitution and apply the law, not personal politics, feelings or preferences."
John Cornyn (R-Tx.): "She must prove her commitment to impartially deciding cases based on the law, rather than based on her own personal politics, feelings, and preferences."
