I'm happy for him, but it's a surprise to say the least. And a bit premature.

For 'extraordinary diplomatic work'

is what the caption on TV says. He cancelled the missile shield in Poland and the Czech Repulbic, which improved relations with Russia a lot; the guy making the announement says he has strengthened the UN a lot.

The one sentence summary the Nobel prize site gives is:

"for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples"

http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2009/

Predict the rightwing response.

- The Nobel committee is always giving prizes to commie non-Christian socialist lefties. This just confirms Obama's one of them.

- They gave it to him because he's black. It's about race. That makes them racist.

- Now we know the real reason why Obama went to Copenhagen. He snuck over to Sweden and strong-armed the Nobel committee into awarding him the prize to distract everyone from the utter failure of his administration.

- Clearly another case of ACORN voter fraud.

Your guess? Last week they were gloating because of our failed attempt to bring the 2012 Olympics to the USA.Today they will be furious.

I do agree that it's a bit premature, but yeah the right wing is going to be freaking. I'm having dinner tonight with 2 friends who are major republican, and I'm not looking forward to it now at all.

Wow, what a pleasant for a Friday morning! Though it seems premature, I think it's important to remember that the prize isn't necessarily awarded for concrete accomplishments, it's often awarded for activism. In fact, some of the leading contenders for this year's award were activists. So, looking at Obama's work toward peaceful international negatiations, nuclear non-proliferation, climate change, and other issues that the committee considers, it makes sense.

A totally undeserved honor, but worth it to see right-wing heads explode.

It will be soooooooooo interesting to see how the far right reacts to this. Will any of them be able to muster up any class?

A comma would have helped that sentence immensely.

I echo the sentiments of those who say it is premature.

I offer my congratulations, but I think it was too soon.

Well, the first reaction from the right has come from Joe Scarborough & Co:

From the link -

"Nobel observers were shocked by the unexpected choice so early in the Obama presidency, which began less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline."

"So soon? Too early. He has no contribution so far. He is still at an early stage. He is only beginning to act," said former Polish President Lech Walesa, a 1983 Nobel Peace laureate.

"This is probably an encouragement for him to act. Let's see if he perseveres. Let's give him time to act," Walesa said.

I have not known that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded as encourgement.

Ditto that sentiment. While I'm pleased for him, I think the prize should be awarded for a body of work already done. An article from AP mentions that the win is "a stunning decision designed to encourage his initiatives to reduce nuclear arms, ease tensions with the Muslim world and stress diplomacy and cooperation rather than unilateralism." I think the Peace Prize should be awarded to laud accomplishments, not encourage inititives.

I agree, but since he has it, lets hope it lights a fire under him.

And the RNC chimes in:

"The real question Americans are asking is, ‘What has President Obama actually accomplished?’ It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights. One thing is certain – President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action."
