"I saw Lansbury in Gypsy."
Did you mean to say MAME?

No--I saw Ann Miller in Mame and she was fun but she didn't seem iconic.
When I saw Lansbury in Gypsy, she DID seem iconic. I thought I was seeing the definitive Rose, and I guess I was, if you consider "definitive" to be a subjective term. But as great (or not great) as they were, I never considered the subsequent Gypsy stars to be definitive--until I saw Patti at Ravinia.

Gotcha. I'm happy it was all you hoped for - that's always a thrill!
I saw Ms. Miller in SUGAR BABIES, and loved every bit of her

Posted: 5/25/08 at 3:35pmShe'd be amazing, but do you think she could bring in audiences?

Posted: 5/25/08 at 4:43pmWell.. Lupone is not exactly packing them in yet.. ( not her fault...I think it is the bitter aftertaste of the Peters production).

Pal Joey, your mentioning being in Patti LuPone's dressing room and "babbling" to her about her transformation from Ravinia to the City Center to the St. James reminded me of my own babbling to a star. It was at an ASCAP memorial for Jule Styne back in 1995 at the Majestic, open to the public. This remarkable event, which had started with Marvin Hamlisch playing the complete overture to GYPSY at the piano, featured such people as Phyllis Newman, Burton Lane, Martin Charnin, Charles Strouse, Betty Comden & Adolph Green, Tyne Daly, and Barbara Cook, all of them performing Jule Styne's songs. The highlight for me was hearing Barbara Cook exquisitely sing "Neverland" from PETER PAN, which had been my first Broadway show in 1954. Afterwards, I just couldn't leave, gawking at the many famous people both on stage and in the audience, as they were leaving. My babbling was addressed to Tyne Daly, who I had seen several times in her production of GYPSY: "Miss Daly, you were so wonderful in GYPSY. I saw Merman in it 5 times and you 5 times and you were...the, uh, epitome...of Ethel Merman--you really got it." Miss Daly did not look particularly pleased. I left quickly.
Incidentally, this is my first time posting on the Off-Topic Board. I shall return.

We should do a book of embarrassing things you wish you hadn't said in front of a star because you have the opportunity to speak to them and you're somewhat starstuck, even though they're probably used to it because they get it all the time.

I love the way she does "Gang way, world, / GET OFFA MY RUNWAY!"
Also, the way she holds the word "go" on "Mama's gotta let go-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o..."
No one ever did those like THAT before.

I'm waiting for a Rose who emphasizes every other vowel and every sixth consonant.
...and rolls her eyes on all the pronouns.
Now, THAT would be ground-breaking.
