Posted: 9/13/05 at 10:36pmI love this. My kids are 10 and 11 and spent too much time helping them with math. I was an excellent math student, but as a father tutor I really suck!

Posted: 9/14/05 at 6:31amAw. I like math this year. Advanced Algebra II, though I hated it last year when it was Geometry. In fact... I've hated math all my life until this year. It must be the teacher, because the class is one of my favorites. He's incredible, hee.

I've actually used Algebra in real life several times. I still remember quite well how to set up and solve an equation when there there are one or more unknown variables -- a situation which you actually confront from time to time.
I don't know. I loved algebra and Calculus and even tutored it to make extra money in college. All thoses x's and y's always seemed like a big game to me and I've always loved solving puzzles and doing logic games. Geometry was OK, but I never was a big fan of Trig which I found boring (how many different ways are there to measure the dimensions of a circle? Too many -- all those rules annoyed me).
I quit math right after Calc II (where there was so much emphasis on greek symbols and imaginary humbers that it felt like a philosophy course) and haven't taken a math class in nearly 20 years, but, I don't know, for the most part I always found math to be pretty fun.

I despised Maths, as we call it in the UK. The second they introduced the alphabet to arithmetic, they lost me!

I can see how you'd feel that way, Margo. Early on in Algebra One felt like that for me, but then they complicated the rules too much. There are so many of them and they all seem so similar... It just all runs together.
I have a math test tomorrow. Study tips, anyone? I'm planning to write out all the formulas and examples.

LOL....this thread is great! Anyway, I'm not a big fan of math but I have to admire people that really enjoy it and I must say that is some respects I enjoyed Algebra 2 but I had a great teacher. Anyway, I'm in college now and I've taken all my math gened's so no more math ever!!!

Algebra. HATE. KILL.
I can comprehend Geometry. I'm okay at addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. But once you bring the alphabet into mathematics, you've lost me.
