I actually thought this was another entry in the second series of movies.
I can't believe they're doing it again.
I would rather they just did a second prequel to the sequel that was the original sequel to the remake, but have it be a reboot to the first prequel in that series which was itself a sequel to the first remake.
I'm pretty sure this is actually a direct sequel to the original 1974 film. I remember reading that some of the original cast members were even doing cameos. While I'm not exactly excited about this, can anything be as bad (or as ridiculous) as Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation?
They mention the original in the trailer so it doesn't look like a remake, thank the lord. But a sequel is a very small step above remake in my opinion. They should just leave well enough alone and stop trying to capitalize on the original. If they want to make money on the name so damn badly, re-release the original in theaters or something.
By the way, who the F*CK runs and locks themselves in a COFFIN when they're being chased by a killer? That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen (next to Gus Van Sant's remake of Psycho...).

I think Gale Weathers hid in a coffin in Scream 3. It was one of the many MANY idiotic things the (previously awesome) characters did in that film.
As much as I love the original CHAINSAW, I think I actually like the '03 remake more. I think overall it's one of the best (American) horror films made in the past 10 years.
Meh. I'd rather watch Texas Chainsaw: The Next Generation again than Nispel's empty, slick murder myoo-sick video "re-imagining."
Interesting. I find that the '03 film succeeds on almost every level and see it as anything but an MTV music video remake, much unlike Nispel's amazingly horrible '09 FRIDAY THE 13th.
Wasn't one of the 80s sequels essentially a remake as well?
I guess horror can be low budget enough, and almost always seems to recoup on DVD that they just love using any famous name (hence the completely not connected remakes of slasher titles like My Bloody Valentine)--but as said here, the reason the first movie works--ona different level than the later 70s and 80s slasher cycle of films, is due to factors that I don'tthink any remake could duplicate. Leatherface makes even less sense as a franchise villain than Michael Myers and all his clones, IMHO.
(That said, I thought the last remake, as JC says, was one of the better horror remakes of the last little while--which may not be saying much--even if it was too slick. At least they didn't try to give the killer a deep psychological backstory the way Elm Street and Rob Zombie's ridiculous take on Halloween did)
I actually really liked the 2003 remake. Had it been released as anything but a remake, it would have gotten a lot less criticism (in my opinion). The first 15 minutes or so alone (with the hitchhiker) are really disturbing. Plus I actually cared about some of the characters, something his Friday the 13th failed miserably to do.
Now does anyone want to weigh in on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning??
Oh, God. Let's not bring Zombie into this discussion. Just thinking about those films makes my blood boil.
"Oh, God. Let's not bring Zombie into this discussion. Just thinking about those films makes my blood boil."
Halloween 2 in particular was just so fvcking pretentious as well as being just unpleasant (I admit, I kinda prefer my horror films scary, and a bit disturbing, but also fun adrenaline rides--not films that leave me feeling depressed). Either way he completely and utterly missed the reason the first Halloween was so great (I admit, I also like the original Halloween 2 and the underated H20 as a nice capper to the series--if only Jamie Lee wasn't contractually obligated to do one more sequel just so they could quickly kill Laurie off, completely ruining the point of the journey of her character--I pretend it never happened).
I've always said that I think the original HALLOWEEN is the greatest horror film ever made.
I wrote a post on here about Zombie's remake after I saw a test screening with spoilers and answered questions and aparantely it was picked up by media all over the world. And people were NOT happy that I hated it.
Halloween 2 (Zombie) was awful. It traded kills and scares for images of Sheri Moon Zombie and a white horse. And while I kind of find the idea of the ending interesting (Laurie going crazy...which reminded me a bit of the ending of Halloween IV), what was shown onscreen was just awful. Speaking of which, I did like (SPOILER) Danielle Harris' death in the remake-sequel. They didn't show everything, but I still thought it was a great send-off to someone who had been with the series on and off since 1988.
I enjoy Halloween 2 a lot (all that blood!) and have so much love for Halloween: H20. It had some genuinely terrifying moments; the death of the boyfriend/girlfriend is one of my favorites. Plus that cast is unbeatable: Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Williams, Josh Hartnett, LL Cool J, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Janet Leigh (in a small role, but still)...just wonderful. The sequel, Halloween: Resurrection then tried to have an even BETTER cast with Busta Rhymes, Tyra Banks, and a completely unknown lead who couldn't even scream well. No wonder it killed the franchise!
Ressurection was awful. They should have left Laurie's story with the trilogy.
I agree that Halloween is probably the greatest horror film (at least that kind of horror film) ever. And yeah, Zombie's pretentions for artiness in his H2 were just... bad.
Add me for the H20 love fest. A truly effective film that delivers almost as well as the original.
Halloween aside, Zombie's new horror movie totally f*ckin' badass.
Lords of Salem.
Yea.
He's not a bad horror film director, he just raped the Halloween franchise.
This new one looks all kinds of messed up. In a good way.
Thanks for the suggestion, tazber. I'll definitely watch it, since I thought The Devil's Rejects was incredible. I might be alone in my love for that flick, though. I just kind of assumed he was like many other horror directors - did some good work and now lives a life of spewing out endless crap and/or producing other (even worse) crap.
I just put H20 in. I totally forgot Joseph Gordon-Levitt was in the beginning!
I'm totally doing the same thing after work. It's a hell of a lot better if you just pretend Halloween: Resurrection never happened. And it's a '90s movie - of course JGL is there!
I haven't seen it in a while and I forgot the DVD is non anamorphic and the sound levels are so low I have to turn my TV's sound up to 90 just to hear it. I would buy the BluRay but it doesn't have any of the features the DVD has (commentary, etc.) so I'm bummed.
