As well it should.
How about Tom Waits's "Martha," sung by Bette Midler. The vocal is from her first appearance on SNL--the first time I'd ever heard her, or hear of her. I subsequently lost my effing mind. (Here it's set to video from the Continental Baths. That works, too.)

Reg - this Bette-o-phile just plotzed.
And that's pretty amazing for a recovering Catholic.

Do you guys ever look at old photos of yourselves and say "why did I think I looked so bad?"

Wow, this thread reminds me of my late grandma's obsession for all things Perry Como. During the 60s, you could not pay me to listen to a Rat Pack, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Steve Lawrence/Edie Gorme or Diahann Caroll recording. I liked the edgier rock, rnb, and emerging funk offerings from the younger, hipper artists. But, Como sang so effortlessly that he made me take note.

Addy--bdwaygirl figured out that whenever you bump an old thread, the bumping post gets lost.

I nearly forgot about the greatest that was Julie London. Not only was she an incredible song stylist, she was married to one of my earliest TV idols Jack Webb, and most importantly she was a "hottie". Her voice was a natural aphrodisiac. I know this is going to come off as sexist as hell but she embodied the essence of femininity to me. They just don't make them like her anymore.
Please check out her take on Cry Me a River which everyone and his/her brother/sister has recorded. And lemma state that I'm a huge fan of the late Ella Fitzgerald & Susan Boyle but Julie's version is the one that does for me.

Oh, it's a long, long while from May to December
But the days grow short when you reach September
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
One hasn't got time for the waiting game
Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days I'll spend with you
These precious days I'll spend with you
But the days grow short when you reach September
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
One hasn't got time for the waiting game
Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days I'll spend with you
These precious days I'll spend with you

Feeling very sentimental this morning, so bumping this favorite thread filled with wonderful melodies, lyrics and memories.
Adding the lyrics from this favorite:
Turning and turning
The world goes on.
We can't change it, my friend.
Let us go riding all through the days,
Together to the end, to the end.
Les bicyclettes de Belsize
Carry us side by side
And hand in hand we will ride,
Over Belsize.
Turn your magical eyes.
Round and around,
Looking at all we found.
Carry us through the skies,
Les bicyclettes de Belsize.
Spinning and spinning,
The dreams I know,
Rolling on through my head.
Let us enjoy them, before they go.
Come the dawn, they all are dead.
Yes, they're dead.
Les bicyclettes de Belsize
Carry us side by side
And hand in hand we will ride
Over Belsize.
Turn your magical eyes.
Round and around,
Lookin' at all we found.
Carry us through the skies,
Les bicyclettes de Belsize.
