One person...a LOT of luggage. What to do? (NYC traveling)
One person...a LOT of luggage. What to do? (NYC traveling)#0

Here is my dilema:
I will be flying to NYC in June and staying for two weeks. My very last day there is my very first day in Massachusetts for another theatre job.
I won't need as much of the things I'm bringing in NYC than I do for MA.
So, I will have one luggage which is all my clothes. Then a carry-on for my papers and laptop. Then I will have a second luggage for my blanket/linens/pillow/fan/cooking supplies/more clothing/shoes. This second luggage won't be used at ALL until MA.
So...what can I do? I don't want to lug the second luggage from the airport to the bus to the subway to the hotel!!
And I can't mail the contents of the second luggage to MA.
What to do!?

Is it the norm to have to bring your own pots and pans and linens? That seems quite bizarre to me.......
I mean you can buy a cheap set of pots and pans for practically nothing, ditto with linens, blanket

Wait, why can't you mail the contents of the second luggage to MA?
The heavy bulky stuff like pots and pans you can order online and have it mailed to the address in Mass.

It's not really pots and pans, just silverware, plates, cups, and some small kitchen stuff.
And I can't have it mailed...it's just not an option. It's a last resort. A VERY last resort.

That's what I thought, but he *said* this:
"Then I will have a second luggage for my blanket/linens/pillow/fan/cooking supplies/more clothing/shoes. This second luggage won't be used at ALL for MA. "
See why I am confused?

elphie I saw that too, I just figured he goofed.
why is mailing not an option?
and why, and forgive me if I am just uninformed....do you need to bring your own silverware? I mean this sounds like a very odd place you are working for.
When I went to Wyoming to work for a summer, they supplied everything........

You can hire a moving and storage company to pick up the stuff you don't need until Mass. Then you pay to have them store it in a storage facility while you are working in NY.
When you are ready for your stuff in Mass, have the moving/storage company deliver it to your place of residence in Mass.
Although having the stuff shipped might be a lot cheaper - the above works too.
Or - leave all your pots and pans and silverware at home - go online and order some cheapher stuff to get you through a few months.
ETA: Where in Massachusetts do they not have mail service, but they have a theatre? I don't get it!

peach, it's ONE suitcase.......it would be a fortune to hire a moving company for one suitcase, and I doubt they'd do it......
I'm still trying to wrap my brain around why he needs to bring his own silverware.....

Oh - I thought it was a lot of luggage. Sorry Capn! I misunderstood.
Well if it's jsut one suitcase, lugging it around NY won't be that bad, although it will be a pain. I've lugged - it stinks.
Capn - save yourself the headache and figure out a way to mail it - or buy a small box of plastic sporks to eat with!
I still want to know where there is a theatre but no post!

Not knowing why mailing things isn't an option to you, it certainly seems like the best way to go. And, can you contact other people you'll be working with in MA? Maybe you won't need as much as you think. If your roomates are bringing some of their kitchen stuff, you could share.
And, I understand bringing your own silverware. I've worked at companies where they've provided EVERYTHING, and I've worked at companies where they provide a furnished apartment, but only furnished with furniture.

Hahaha, I didn't want to take the time to explain everything, but I will. :-P
We're going to be living in three different locations. Two weeks who knows where yet, most of the time at a college campus, then a week in who knows where again.
The college is small and NO ONE will be there during the summer except for us residents. We get private rooms, no roommates. But we'll have suitemates.
I do have an option to ship via UPS/FedEx, but if I do, it's going to be a HUGE box and I don't have a car and I would have to worry about finding someone being able to drive from the location pick-up to my room.
I'll go ahead and probably mail. I won't get it probably for a few days or a week after I arrive. Oh well. I just don't want to be a nuisance on anybody.

Well, if you don't want to spend extra money, just take both suitcases with you. It's a bit of a hassle...but it's not that bad. I did it myself when I dropped by NYC a few days before moving to London.
I took Supershuttle from the airport to the door of where I was staying---not so bad.

Capn - I'm sure someone there will have a car, and (if you're nice, and maybe buy them a latte ;D ), will give you a ride from the delivery spot to your room.
I wouldn't worry about being a nuisance. I'm sure someone would be glad to help you out with a ride. It's a small favor!

Posted: 5/9/06 at 11:32amI would take a large collapsable suitcase and get most of that stuff in NY. Then at least you only have to lug it from NY to MA. I would bring plasticware, not silverware, as it weighs less. As for room, get spacebags for your pillows and blankets. You can use a vaccum to suck most of the air out and they take up very little space. Just don't bring anything that you think you can get there. Fans are cheap and it sounds like a pain to tote.
