Actually, this was before online degrees, but he got his doctorate through a correspondence course, culminating in a 30-minute phone conversation for a final review of his thesis. He then insisted that everyone in his office begin addressing him as "Dr. [his last name]." They did, and they laughed at him behind his back all the while.
