Posted: 1/6/05 at 12:25pmWho here is an "only" child? How does that make you different than those of us who grew up in big households?

Posted: 1/6/05 at 12:26pmI'm a self-involved diva bitch - but does that make me different?

Posted: 1/6/05 at 12:29pmI know several people on this board who I suspect to be only children.

Basically - I have a half-brother and half-sister but they were raised in a different household. So for any psychological purposes, I am an only child, as that is how I was raised.
And you?

Only child here.
I say the independence that it fostered has better prepared me to survive in this wacky world.
My ex-girlfriend said that it has made me a self-centered, attention-starved know-it-all.
I'll bet it's somewhere in between. If and when my life is blessed with children, I have resolved to have two. :)

Posted: 1/6/05 at 12:56pmDo you think only children are more sensitive and thin skinned once they become adults and are living away from home?
#11re: Only Child?
Posted: 1/6/05 at 12:57pmDepends on how they were raised. I was raised by one bitch-on-wheels of a mother, so in my case, no.

Posted: 1/6/05 at 1:05pmYes, RJ, Miss Dion is the youngest of 16. We're probably related. I think I've got about 2700 cousins running around in Canada.

nope I'm not an only child.. I have two brothers and a sister.
but this should blow your mind..
Random fact.. my grandmother is 1 of 21 children all by the same parents.. Then she also has two half siblings that her father had in a previous marriage..

Interesting re: thin skinned and sensitive comment. I'm an only child and was always aware of the stereotypes associated with being one. I tended to go out of my way to share more than others and realize that the world didn't revolve around me. However, I have always been very sensitive. I'm developing a thicker skin, but I never thought it had anything to do w/ being an only child. Perhaps it does...
As for making me different from people who have large families, I think I have a different type of relationship with my parents. I don't know how to describe it, but it's a very close relationship- as much as they drive me crazy, they are two of my best friends.

I'm the last of five, but also, as Bob Ross would say, a happy little accident.
There's a few years between me and my siblings and, even though we were raised in the same house, we weren't really raised as traditional 'siblings'. They were very much care-givers. It's only now, as adults, that we are dealing with each other as equals and it's quite nice.
